Its so boring...help!

I live in Florida, where lanais, pools and pool cages are the norm. Mine is so boring and I don't know what to do about it. It's wonderful in the fall and winter when I can open all the sliding doors and let the outside in, but 60% of the time it is just closed up and I have to find a way to dress it up. I like very contemporary furnishings and my color scheme inside is blue, orange, yellow and green.

Hire a designer to eliminate the cage for people look.

brighter cushions and toss pillows and tables.

Yes, I agree , you need to add your colors in pillows and cushions. You need some potted trees or plants as well . Make some drama by adding a space to sit with an area rug . Add some teak long benches by the pool. Lovely space so enjoy it!

Decorating around the pool will not take away the design flaw. Yes it is boring and you need to focus on the pool and not the surroundings. Can't tell what the decking is, but if you can use a concrete coating, create a coping around the perimeter and then for the rest, create a pattern with more texture like large tiles or stone texture. One big thing is the pool does not have a water feature which will be tricky to do and not have it look like it was an after thought. Hire a pool contractor to give you some ideas. Or look on Houzz at pools similar to yours and look at the waterfeatures.

Unfortunately, there is no room to add a sitting area and rug, unless I remove the dining table. I do have several plants, but I can certainly add more and taller ones. I love the pvc or metal panels. Anybody know where to find them? I also love the lighted pots! Thanks

yep, did you see where I added the Acurio up there? They are online.

here is a design that could add interest to where your table and chairs are.

Used as a screen to separate

Once again these panels are hung as screening.

I would make the place where your table and chairs are more decorative or ornate, separate that area in some way so when you look at it there is interest there.

I would move the plastic table you have in the corner, then set up the other two chairs and a small table over there. i would then stand screens and plants just past that room so that you have a semiprivate patio there and it is more interesting when you look out.

I would put a third sitting area, which can be the two recliners over where they are, once again, i would attach the screens to your enclosure and then plant external plants to grow large out of doors. then provide screens and lush foliage to the sides of the two loungers to make this semiprivate too. I would then repeat these patterns at the end of the pool to the left of the loungers. and then at the end nearest the house. The point is to create an interesting scenario anywhere you can look out. the same with the first set of sliding glass doors to the left of the dining set. this way, anywhere the eye is directed whether in the house or out, it will be met with lushness and colorful pattern. Instead of big tables get some of those delightful drums or stools, if they cost too much, buy a large pot and put a flat surface on it. The colors, the screens and your planting externally and internally will make it feel like you have wonderful small retreats.

I agree that it would be nice to bring your inside colors out onto your lanai with cushions, pillows, etc. We have potted plants all over ours. There are so many resin and pvc planters in bright colors. Bring your plants up off the ground with taller planters. You have the perfect spot in front of the space where your pocket door slides to put 3 planters of varying heights with small palms or bromeliads in them. These come in heights from 16 to 30 inches and can be painted any color you wish.

Build a rock garden in the corner.

Lots and lots of beautiful pots full of colorful flowers. A large type planter with trellis can give vertical interest. I also like the rock garden idea above.

Install a 60s style, geometric patterned stained glass in the windows and let the colored light shine through!

I also like the rock garden idea, from a perspective of pulling nature into this enclosed area. I would also add furniture and planters with seasonal plantings for colour and interest. Have you thought about acid washing and dying the concrete to give it some texture and colour?

I agree w/ the above-- plantings are needed. I would love to see banking tropical plants together: palms of various textures and perennials w/ color mixed in. Also, lanai bamboo design furnishings sitting on outdoor rugs to create center-of-interest locations for gatherings. Some very unique lighting too to highlite the clusters of plantlife. What about a floor--arc lite also in the group of furniture for height?

You could also add a contemporary freestanding sculpture to help give your pool area that extra modern feel. Here are a few colorful handmade pieces that can add excitement and intrigue to your space (they are suitable for indoor and outdoor display - can withstand all seasoned weather)

Reaching Out Copper by Jon Allen

Red Centinal by Jon Allen (available in additional color options)

Ocean Wisp by Jon Allen (a fusion of aquamarine and green)

Silver Maritime Massive by Jon Allen

If you're also looking for accents to hang on your outdoor walls, here are 2 handcrafted compositions that would complement the freestanding sculptures -

Big Blue Fish by Jon Allen (44 in x 34 in x 2 in) The unique pre-installed brackets 'float' the artwork 2 in off the wall.

Island Time Silver Fish by Jon Allen (21 in x 17 in x 2 in)
