Kitchen Layout Ideas

We are building a new house and I thought I would reach out to the experts here for kitchen layout ideas. Taking ideas on anything else as well.

Here is a list of what we would like, but we know compromise is probably in order. Kitchen is roughly 17' wide x 14' deep with the later flowing into the dinning room.

Nice big island without anything on it other than a small prep sink

36" gas cooktop /w great ventilation and work space on either side of the cooktop

30" double ovens

36" recessed fridge

sink looking out window on north side of kitchen

roughly 36" heirloom china cabinet to be near dinning area

I have attached our first floor layout. We are still tweaking some details, but its pretty much what we will be building.

You don't have a shower in the master bath? More people shower than bathe.

    Basic plan to start:

I moved the activity room door over, to make room for the fridge.

Are those columns in the DR? Going on that assumption, I centered the china cabinet with a narrow window on each side.

    Good luck!

I think the position of the ovens should change in order to have counter there for items needing a landing from fridge...unless you delete or move the prep sink from that end of island . The island would work as a large landing except for the interruption of sink.... so you need that end of counter where ovens are. Generally, I'd go for a range and place it on outside wall and move sink to interior position[laundrywall]...and as mentioned omit the island sink, perhaps have a small sink in fridge/snack zone. I'm assuming the wall you chose for fridge is your final choice.....it seems a bit distant/isolated, thus the need to utilize the closest positions you have for good counter space. Is there no patio or french door to a back deck or porch or yard from your large open area??

On double checking, I think the area between the columns is a slider--which is a great idea, but where are you considering placing the china cabinet in the open concept DR?

I like herbflavor's suggestion of a range, rather than separate cooktop and ovens. I've always had a range, in a smaller kitchen, but I've read that a wall oven is more comfortable for anyone with back issues, so it's whatever you prefer. If the cooktop is moved toward the top wall, the ovens and fridge location could be switched, but then the landing space for the oven would be the island, as it is for the fridge in the plan I posted.

Here's an option with a range, making the cabinet to the left of the range, as well as the island, slightly longer, to narrow the gap between the fridge and landing space across the aisle. I moved the range down, to get it closer to the island prep space, using herbflavor's other suggestion of moving the prep sink. That leaves a nice space between the clean-up sink and range, for a helper:

I put the china cabinet beside the DW--I don't necessarily like it there, but I can't think of another location for it (if that's a door between the columns). Possible slightly more distant alternate location would be where I have the MW/snack area, with a MW drawer on the end of the island, facing the activity room door.

Thank you for the input. I think the china cabinet would go where you have the microwave and we will do a drawer style microwave in the island. I would like to stick to wall ivens and a cooktop, but I am okay with the range being the compromise if it means a better fridge location. The slider is between those two columns.
