Great start, Love the wall color and I love that the cabinet blends into the wall. The cabinet is not the "star" of the room, it is best not to draw attention to the cabinet.

OK so the first photo is a close up of the rug. The other photos are more angles of my space - it's all open concept on this floor. PLEASE ignore the mess, it's Friday after a busy week with twin 4 year olds. We do life in this space! (And they are not quite in bed yet!)

Love the rug, love the wall. Ask hubby if we can trade the recliner in for 2 wonderful swivel chairs where our guest can watch the TV or the fireplace!

You need a big beautiful square ottoman where everyone can put their feet an the twins can lounge! Practical fabric or leather.

I agree that a tv unit doesn't have to be an attention-getter. What is getting my attention is the contrast between the 'tv wall' --and the rug and adjoining lighter wall.

In person at home, [can't be sure from here] is there such sharp contrast between the navy tv wall, and the beautiful area rug? It's a lot of drama for a delicately beautiful rug.

Would it work to find [can be hard to find] a large tray to place on the ottoman when needed? New ottoman is another piece in the middle otherwise - crowding.

I love the picture of the twins......get it hung it is soooo darling.

Your navy wall is lovely too and I like the dark TV and cabinet against the wall.

Find some colorful art work for either side of the TV and also some sconces for extra lighting in the room.

You might want to put the chair by the window and move the TV/console more to the left toward the hall.

Find a large corner table, round, skirted and put a lamp on it to fill in the area and direct traffic around sofas.

With little ones find a lively print fabric for Roman shades on the windows and hang them from the ceiling.

For the cocktail table try two small tables or upholstered cubes whichever will be best for the twins, but a pair that can be scattered around the room as needed.

Bring in a large baskets for scatter toys for storage.

Pillows and throws on each of the sofas for color and comfort.

one third books, one third space, one third stuff in the book cubbies.

Fun idea for either side of TV.

Something else for the wall.

I love this last pic I found......so doable. Just keep your mats all bright white and frames same with for drama and consistency.

Don't take me wrong - you have nice things - I think we're all trying to help you achieve the look you said you want. This might be large, and another shade is ok, just happens to be the same color [seems same as your table]... :)

Your 1st ideabook has some of your distressed teal color. If we knew what you mean by: mid-century modern, rustic, and somewhat industrial. Maybe post a few inspiration photos here? Especially if you can find use of your colors, especially navy.

Tell me - I think your home's elements are more 4 and 5.

I know you said the couches stay, but is there any way you could relocate the loveseat to a den or basement? Then you could have room for two streamlined arm chairs(narrower arms) and either an ottoman or coffee table.

Wow your rug is very beautiful!
But everdebz is right. The contrast of colours between the navy wall and the rug do not go together.
The other issue that i think you have is that either one of the sofas have to go. Personally I think the love seat works better in your space than the other sofa (but perhaps upholstered in a different colour - but we can get to that later).
I see very little mid century inside here though, more towards transitional. The dining area could fit in a little bit of an eclectic feel into your space.

Ok so I grabbed a few of my inspiration photos that I've "accumulated" along the way. I have followed and love Young House Love for a lonnnng time so that's where a lot started. I loved the navy in the first photo and literally just went out and bought the same one. I wanted to do the same with the rug, but it's from West Elm and was way out of our price range. :(

The couches have to stay, or we won't have anywhere to sit. The armchair is gone as soon as I can find a replacement. I really don't like it.
Do understand as well that for me, unfortunately, this will have to be a slow process. 4 year old twins don't come cheap - and funds are tight. It will likely be a slow accumulation of wish list items combined with garage sale luck that finishes this space! haha! But I am loving the suggestions and thank you all for brainstorming with me!! Inspiration photo 2 sets a deep understated moodiness feel - which is nice but then again that is just one photo of an area without knowing how it blends into the rest of the home. I see it quite hard to pull that look of with what you've got at the moment.

Inspiration photo 3 is the most mid century modern look of all your inspiration photos. But notice how everything is clean lines and muted. The splash of navy comes from just the armchair fabric. It doesn't overwhelm.

Inspiration photo 1 is something you could achieve more easily with the stuff you've got. But notice how it's got one feature wall (the mantle and the navy blue). You've got two feature walls and for some time I just couldn't figure out why it didn't work but I'm guessing it is because it is too busy that my eye wants to look at the beautiful mantle piece but is drawn away from it because of the navy.

Could I ask how many people do you need to seat in your household? I think anymore armchairs would be cluttering unfortunately, if we can't have less seating space (ie you really need two sofas). From your inspiration photos and what you tell us the first thing I would start is let the sofas do the navy talking and tone down the wall.

Go slow with it and take your time. When you spend more time in the living room you'll take notice how you use you room and what you don't like and like. It is more rewarding you accumulate the stuff you love over time. Do update us how it goes!

Food for thought for sure, thank you all. When we moved in in July we painted the wall because it was already a dark dark color to begin with. It was a dark muddy brown (not my taste at all) ... so I suppose when we walked in we were already swayed to paint it dark since that's how it came. (House was built in 2011 and rented out so these were all the colors it was built with.)

We literally just bought the rug so that's a bit discouraging... (I liked how it tied in a lot of the colors I like) I'm hoping to somehow make it work. Oh how I wish I could win the lottery and buy all the things! One income is just not working for my design "wants" lol :)

There are 4 of us, plus my mom who lives in the suite downstairs, but we would like to be able to host dinner at our house, when we even just invite one family over we definitely require both sofas.

So now I'm trying to figure out what most people think:

get rid of the furniture

get rid of the rug

move the tv

get rid of the navy wall...

If I combine all the advice here I basically would have to start from scratch... Now I'm more confused than when I first posted!!! lol

I think your furniture is lovely.

And the picture frame kit I suggested was 50 dollars, but sometimes that is too much at the time. I had twins too, #5 and 6. haha

Your room is lovely and little ones do enjoy all the stuff you have in the room.

But if you cannot afford frames, then go to Wal Mart, Target, Cost Plus etc and start with one picture and add another one each month. In 6 months you will have your wall collage. When you buy a picture buy a pillow that coordinates with the picture. In six months the room will be more decorated than it is now. The white blinds on either side of the fireplace will help to lighten that end of the room. Hang you darling pic of the twins and declutter and design each of the cubbies on the fireplace as they give so much structure and will always be neat and out of little hands reach. haha

Your room is lovely, enjoy it each day, but enjoys those twins more. Four is the perfect age for Mom and Tots. Lucky you.

My real advice is to Bloom Where You Are Planted!

And thank you about the photo of the twins - I will most definitely be hanging it but it may move from that location. I took that image and as I am also a photographer I am probably going to find another more current photo for its place. That one may end up in a gallery wall upstairs. :)

If you are a photog then why are you not using color prints on the Navy Wall with white and gold and light wood frames with white mats? Curious!

Your room looks great.

I like your navy wall and once you have the artwork up on the wall it will be fine. Be sure to pick artwork that has colors from your rug which is beautiful. Keep it and the rug. Please paint light switches and sockets same as the wall. None of the high end mags have contrasting socket and switch covers. I think the sofa with its back to the dining area is out of proportion. That is what I would remove and get two swivel chairs as suggested and a bunch of large floor pillow for the kids. Keep the ottoman and put it in the center. You have a great start here. Don't despair!

@soosun2 haha because I haven't gotten that far yet? lol! I have two photos so far that I will be hanging there (frames may change, they are just photos we had in the old place) Not my images but they have meaning to us. I have lots of my own photos I hope to use within my whole house. As of yet we haven't hung much at all. I honestly don't know how it could possibly be October already, it still feels like we just moved in! I was hesitant to hang these two until I figured out my plan.

The squares on the TV wall are meant to be the artwork that you posted yesterday (in case it isn't clear). Quick observation on the dining room. If possible, I would clear the corners of the room (black bookshelf, computer). I love the table and chairs but I think the items in the corners lessen the charm. Ex.

er612 - the computer will be moved to the den/office once that room is no longer housing all our extra storage while we moved stuff around... we were trying to give our 4 year olds their own "big kid rooms" before we tackled that area, so unfortunately the computer is there for now. The black shelf won't work in that other spot, as that area is only about 6 inches deep and also has a separation of flooring right there, so it won't stay put.

I also don't feel like the wall color is quite as dark as the photos make it out to be... It's a true navy for sure but in real life it's closer to the same as my first inspiration photo (since it's the same color paint)
I still don't know what to do about a coffee table in this space.

I rarely advise TV over the mantel, but in your case I think so. Mounted on an articulated swing arm it can be tilted down or moved to face either sofa and should meet your needs. Then I'd use the navy wall for an art gallery.

No problem. Back to the coffee table...If you switch the two sofas so the darker one faces the fireplace, center the ottoman, add a tray so the ottoman doubles as a coffee table, then you could skip an additional coffee table altogether.

I like the dark blue. And with a well arranged gallery wall around the tv I think it'll look amazing. I'm thinking with the gallery though, it would be important to have other darker pictures (with light mats) so that the TV isn't the only dark spot? Does that make sense?

I think in that second inspiration pic you posted they could have done that a bit better. The TV dark spot seems accentuated more than it might have been otherwise

I can't tell from the picture how big this room is, but is there room to pull the blue couch back? If you pulled it back more then there would be ample space for a coffee table.

I really like the room so far, and think it shows a great sleek, modern feel that is warm and inviting. What I would consider changing to the room though is perhaps to add some free-standing floor lighting, to give the room a little more contrast with the dark navy wall, particularly as winter approaches like our Strobe Marble Floor Lamp. Also consider the possibilities of a coffee table, to tie the room together, maybe in a complimentary wood or elegant glass, to make the most of the natural light that comes from your windows. Really great work has been made on your new home, I look forward to seeing more :)

beautiful room. love the wall color. i think it would be nice if you added some light golds or polished nickels to the room.

1) you could change the media consoles handles to muted gold handles, which would change the look of the console without a lot of work.

2) add some gold candle pillars or small art pieces to the fireplace.

3) change fan to a pretty polished nickel chandelier.

4) add some end tables or coffee table in a muted gold or polished nickel.

5) also adding some mirrors in the furniture or on the walls might lighten it up.

Not anywhere near finished, but did some work to the room. I do plan to change the handles on the console, as well as add metallics to the room via either occasional/end tables, or there's also a freestanding floor light I want to buy for when I can replace that awful accent chair. (again, I know what I want to put there, just need to wait to be able to afford it!)

So this weekend we mounted the tv to the wall (after much discussion and contemplating putting it above the fireplace, we decided against it.) and I was able to put up a few frames around it to start a gallery wall. This will evolve over time (and as you can see one frame is empty, just holding a place currently) because as a photographer I have a tendency to change photos quite frequently. I'm also able to put some decor on the console now. We moved a side table and put a plant on it, and the basket below hides the wires in behind, as well as holds whatever toys, etc. my kids bring into the room. This one little change already has me feeling a little more "at home" here. :) Still trying to decide what kind of coffee table to go with and where. I also am not sure what to do with the little shelves beside the mantle. They are very shallow, not real bookshelves.

Sprout - which couch is it you think could be pulled back to put a coffee table by? They are both grey, one dark charcoal (with the ottoman) and the other a lighter grey.

I love the TV wall. So glad you didn't put the TV above the fireplace. It looks much better on the navy wall.

To your original question about the coffee table, if you're keeping the chaise ottoman, you don't have a lot of space left, so maybe a narrow MCM table like Ikea's Stockholm or this retro table...

Or West Elm's Reeve or Clover...

The first changes you made per Thursday pic look great (tv area). Plant is a great touch.

You really don't need a coffee table if you have a couple of end tables with lamps. You might consider a taller lamp with a less wide column -- yellow doesn't work all that well with your other color choices. I'd put the large table with the small yellow lamp on the other (left) side of the sofa. You can actually get an end table/lamp/mag rack combo -- single piece of furniture so consider those. Check out the Habitat for Humanity Restore Store nearest you for potential bargains.

Instead of investing in a coffee table, opt for an ottoman with a reversible top -- one side as a cushion and the other a firm surface for use as a coffee table. [If that top cushion to the large ottoman you already have is detachable and flips, you might consider making the underside of your ottoman usable as a coffee table by adding a painted board to it that would be hidden when the cushion side is up.)

If you do opt to paint the credenza below the tv, opt for a different shade of the same color as the wall rather than stark white.

I'm a long time fan of ceiling fans and firmly believe that a fancy chandelier belongs only in a large formal entry or over a formal dining table. The suggestion to make that swap would not leave you with a comfortable and inviting looking room.

You might eventually consider a pair of glass doors for the shelves above the fireplace to protect your collectibles from residue from fireplace smoke and minimize dusting of your collectibles, especially if you actually use the fireplace or, if you frame and place the pic of the boys elsewhere, you could even create a curio cabinet above your fireplace, including above your mantel if your collectibles are numerous. Alternately, you might eventually consider painting the shelves and the indent for them something other than white.

Try not to add so much stuff that you end up with a cluttered feel to the room.

Okay, I'm going to preface this with the fact that I don't have kids, and don't have any experience with kids.
I love what you've done so far and the navy wall is gorgeous. I'd love to continue the navy onto the fireplace wall to make the white fireplace and builtins really pop, but with the open concept I wouldn't know where to stop the navy between the living and dining spaces. I jsut bought a house and I'm so happy it's not open concept for just that reason.
Anyway, you asked about coffee tables. My gut reaction is a nice round coffee table. No sharp corners for the kiddos.

I think with the shelves, the key will be to have one or two significant items per shelf. Avoid little things that read as clutter (which is sort of what's happening now) and avoid too much symmetry too.
Find stuff to try out and take some pics!
