Should I remove granite to install backsplash?

My kitchen looks much like this one. We want to put backsplash tile and a friend tells me I must remove the piece of granite there and run the backsplash tile to the counter. I want to get it right but it looks like they left the piece of black granite here.

It has been my experience that it is done both ways. if the 3-4" rise is already there I would be inclined to tile above it as shown in the picture. If the granite and the tile back splash are going in at the same time it will save you money to tile only.
