You mentioned you're thinking of tiling the stairs and then asked if you should cover them with carpet or leave them wood so I'm not understanding your question. Photos may also help to see the location(s) and colors.

We are pulling up the carpet and hopefully putting a porcelain plank tile in the room at the bottom of the stairs. At the top of the stairs there is ceramic tile and a wood saddle. We were told you really can't tile the stairs so I am looking for suggestions what to do with the stairs. Carpet or just leave wood? See the photo. Thanks

I would do wood , much easier to keep clean ...why don't you use laminated for stairs and basement , it will give a feeling of continuity rather than split space

Please let me rephrase. We are pulling up the carpet on the stairs and in the room below that the stairs lead to. I plan on putting porcelain plank tiles in the room where the existing carpet is. The hallway on top of the stairs has ceramic tile. There is a wood saddle on the top of the stairs. We were told you can't realistically tile the stairs so I am looking for the best solution. Carpet? Stained wood? Or something I'm not thinking of. We are thinking using something in the grey family for the porcelain planks

I am in a bit of the same situation. We have hardwood at the top of the stairs and we will be pulling up the carpet in the basement to put down tile. Stairs presently have the same carpet that will be gone from the basement. My plan short term is to keep the carpet on the stairs and have some of the carpet we are taking up bound into area rugs because it is still in good shape. My stairs will match the area rugs on the tile.
