Update on B&S 9HP Intek No Start Engine

Well, good and bad news on my engine that wouldn't start. See the original post here. It turns out to probably just be a lot of water in my gas. I gave up after getting a new carb that still wouldn't start, and took it to a neighbor who has a little shop for small equipment. There was enough water in the bottom of my tank that the gas may not have been flowing or I may have attempted to run on water. I didn't see the problem, so I'm not sure this is really all of it. Who knows, the old carb. may still not have run off choke and the new carb. may have gotten a slug of water as the first thing. Anyway, the current report is my chipper is running again with a clean gas tank and perhaps an extra still good carb. (or not).

All modern gas we have to buy has ethanol which is a water magnet. Start adding Stabil or equivalent to the cans you store small engine gas in so it's guaranteed to go in the machine.

I should have mentioned that my local repair guy is a huge fan of Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment. He claims that regular Red Stabil (which I use) doesn't really do the job. He included a bottle in the repair.

Is that an Opinion Or Fact? I have used Stabil Only in the Ethanol and
have not had a problem up to a year as I mix.
I did find on one bottle it’s good for 2 years from the date it’s
opened. Planning to date my current
bottle when opened, I did not find or see that note. I’ll still respect the old
    note 2 years.

Is it still recommended to top the tank while storing
if the gas is treated (to deal with moisture)?
That could be a lot of fuel to dump (if over stored) . Related, If I plan to store over a
year, I drain and run engines “Bone Dry of fuel” which worked before Stabil for a year (boating less due to drought conditions).

Of course its opinion. I haven't really had issues with my other equipment. I have used Stabil for five years or more. It looked like he found almost a pint of water in my chipper tank. I have had it for 10 years and I may not have been using Stabil originally. I had certainly not drained the tank so it has had 10 years to collect water. I guess I should go out and see if I can find ways to drain my other units and see what I find.

    I value Opinions due to
having My Own (With Personal Experiences as Ref). LOL

    Checking for water, I simply
dump "ALL" small amounts in a clear container and observe instantly – 8 hrs. I got caught bad once helping a neighbor start
his unused mower. It showed initially that
it was only a bad kill switch not releasing due to Dog’s damage to the
cable. The next morning I could tell he
only made one round and asked why. “It just stopped” was his reply. We dumped his gas and instantly saw his 2nd
problem. I hope the mower is still
running today as it was when we added Fresh Fuel (before he moved).

I've also been using Stabil for years with no problems. Forums like this, ask a question, you'll get ten answers and fifteen opinions. :-) I was recently reminded of another good thing to do with small engines, Fogging Oil. Hadn't thought of it since I had a boat up on Lake Ontario. In addition to Stabil, end of season, spray fogging oil in carb until engine dies, remove bowl and spray up inside carb, remove plug(s), and spray into cylinder(s) turn engine over a few times. You're set for the winter or for years.
