kitchen sink advice

Need advice on good brands of stainless steel kitchen sinks. I want a single bowl, contemporary, rectangle looking undermount 16 gauge sink. I'm trying to find what brands are quality. I don't want to spend more than $750. I want a modern looking sink. There are so many brands I've never heard of, i.e. Kraus which seemed to have good reviews. Lenova which had mixed reviews and I'm also wondering what's the best finish to get (brushed, satin, etc.), Belle Foret, Ruvati. Help! I need to order one within the next few days to be ready for our new counters. This is the look I want: http://www.efaucets.com/detail.asp?Product_Id=515823

I like that look too, but I feel like I read that people have issues with those very sharp corners. I have always liked white cast iron sinks, but I did a large bowl stainless in a vacation condo. I think I ended up with Blanco. I went with more rounded corners. It just went in, though, so I can't tell you about its function. I like the look, though and am excited about the single bow. I bet if you do a search on Blanco, Kraus, etc. you will find many threads on this subject.

Thanks for the super quick feedback. I'll try doing that. I'm actually replacing one with the sharp corners, it's not too bad to clean though the corners do get a little discolored. It was a knockoff of a $1500 Kohler sink and came in a little warped. We were able to use it by having some pieces welded with the old counter. I can't do that with the new counter though.

Not sure how their pricing is these days, but check out Julien. We are very happy with our 0-radius cornered single bowl sink. Ours was installed in spring 2007. And

I have this kraus sink (and apparently so do many many other amazon shoppers lol )

What can I say, it's a sink... It looks modern and nice, it isn't loud, and it doesn't cost a fortune. No complaints so far. They also have a zero radius model but I thought that would be harder to clean.

C-Tech and Karran make excellent sinks. The Karran Edge series stainless steel sinks can be seamed undermounted into plastic laminate and solid surface tops and into stone and estone with a negative reveal.

I have a 36", 16 ga stainless, single bowl apron front sink with the zero radius corners like that. It is a Vigo and I bought it on overstock for $550. Absolutely love it. Since you already have a zero radius you know the corners are not hard to clean at all. We've been really happy with ours for about 15 months now. This was before everything was finished but it looks just as good now!

dcward89 that's beautiful. How do you clean your corners. Wondering if there's a best way. I do end up with a little discoloration in mine.

Seems like you want a zero radius sink. I am also getting a new SS undermount sink, but I refuse to get zero radius because I think the corners look really hard to clean. But this is the one I'm getting. 16-gauge, great price:

I have a Kraus sink with rounded corners in another kitchen, and it has been very easy to take care of. For the remodel in our main kitchen, I originally was going to get the Kohler Whitehaven, but have decided to go with the Kohler Prolific, K-5540. It is 18 gauge, and comes with accessories that fit in the ledges. You can check out the reviews on Amazon, Wayfair, etc. It's a little more money, but you can probably get a Wayfair coupon to get it into your budget.

I have a small kitchen so I do have a smaller sink. I also went with Kraus. If I remember correctly I think it is .75 radius corners, so not quite so sharp as some other sinks, also 16 gauge. It is not difficult to clean at all. It has a rear middle drain and the grid that comes with it is great.

    Kraus Sink

I have the Kraus sink fishcow linked to. Looks great. Easy to clean. Love the grid it comes with. My only complaint is the pitch to the drain could be a bit steeper.

Another Kraus sink, here. I put mine in about a year and a half ago and it still looks brand new. No problems with the corners (mine is 36" 69/40, so twice as many corners). I don't do anything special when I clean it. I've also not been very nice to it, washing out paint trays and drywall tools every weekend.

Thanks for all the feedback. Seems folks have had had good luck with Krauss. the Kohler Prolific is gorgeous. wondering if anybody else has purchased this and their experience. I see it's 18 gauge. I would have to talk my husband into the thinner gauge.

I don't believe Franke is 16 gauge but they make top quality sinks, Sinks are made is Switzerland, well insulted, high croamium content, attention to detail with their polishing, very heavy wire racks. Mine has been installed 3 years and still looks like new.

No discernible difference between 18 and 16-gauge. Get the sink you like. What you don't want is anything higher than 18-gauge.

FWIW, I couldn't tell a difference in 18ga vs 16 ga but my hubby, who is an engineer in the metal working/manufacturing industry, swore up and down he could tell, so we got the 16 ga to please him.

I live in Cincinnati and was able to go to warehouse last weekend to see the seamless sinks. Love the look and think the design is brilliant. Debating whether to go with hole in middle or to side but I will do half radius and buy this brand. Think it might be something worth considering in your search!

We've been using our newly installed 16 gauge Ruvati single bowl with ledge and assessories for about 3 weeks now. Love the large single bowl. My husband also installed a HUSH under it for support. Because of its shape, it didn't cinch flat against the underside because of the square edges and size.

No issues whatsoever with corners. The biggest issue because it's a flatter bottom is having to chase food around the sink trying to wash it down the drain!

Got it online for about $500, if I remember correctly.

Jancy -- I have that Kraus sink too and I've had no difficulty cleaning it. It's not zero-radius but it's tight; still it's cleanable.

I wanted the middle drain because I stuck the sink on the corner of an island so I could access it equally from both sides of the corner. I put the faucet on the far back corner of the sink (catty-corner from the edge of the island if you follow). It's worked well!

dcward89 I've never used that BKF. Which type do you use?

Wilson853 where did you get your Wayfair coupon? I looked on the internet but didn't see any. On the Wayfair site it says they typically don't offer any.

Wayfair 10% off coupons came in the last three VALPAK coupon packs I've gotten with the junkmail. I just checked Homeclick.com and they have 10% off for Columbus Day with Free Shipping.

I use the powdered BKF...not sure if there are different varieties besides powdered vs liquid...if so, just the original powdered BKF. I bought the liquid once but actually found it harder to rinse away than the powdered. I have seen some people complain about not liking the smell but I never noticed any kind of smell at all from it. It sure makes my sink look beautiful!!

Wilson853 I've decided to go with the Kohler Prolific. It's a bit more than I wanted to spend but it's perfect in every way - the look, the size and the racks that fit inside sold me. I'm so tired of having random dishes/pans drying on my counter. Thanks for the advice on the discounts. I just dug my ValPak out of the garbage (from yesterday) but no coupon. I'll go to Homeclick.com. I noticed there is a Kohler K-5540-NA and a Kohler K-5540. I'm trying to sort out the difference between the two. My goal is to order today.

dcward89 great advice. I'll pick some up. I could never get my SS sinks super clean. I used 409 but it didn't make it shine.

figured the Kohler code - NA just means their is no color!

I use powder Bon Ami or BKF on my SS sink.

I am so glad that the Prolific is perfect for you! Although the Whitehaven was appropriate for my kitchen design, I just couldn't get over the versatility and flexibility of this sink. It is a prep and clean up sink in one, which was important to me, since we have taken out the extra prep/bar sink in this remodel. You might want to consider purchasing an additional white rack, K-5542. They call it the Multipurpose Grated Rack. It comes with two, but with three, you can completely cover the bottom of the sink to prevent scratches. You can pop them into the dishwasher very easily, something that is not as easy with a large stainless grid.

Good idea wilson853. I was considering ordering this as a solution. It seems versatile too: http://www.us.kohler.com/us/Flexible-kitchen-mat/productDetail/Universal-Accessories/1116362.htm The sink is ordered AND I saved $82!!! thanks to your HomeClick suggestion.

I also wanted to put in another vote for the Kraus 30" sink - it's great and was under $300 when I bought it. The Kohler Prolific was more than I wanted to spend, but looks pretty sweet though! I'm a bit jealous! My only complaint for either is that I think 10" depth is actually a little too deep (thankfully the grate that comes with it ameliorates this a bit). I'd rather not have to bend over quite so much.

I thought you might like to see my sink 15 months later...using BKF every week, sometimes twice a week and it looks just as good as new...

    This is now...

This was at install, June, 2014.

taylorbrooke, congrats on the sink and saving $$. It is always nice when that works out. I like the mat that you linked. I could have used that over the divide in my old white cast iron Exec Chef sink and prevented the inevitable gray pot and pan marks.

dcward89 that stuff is amazing. Thanks so much for sharing the photos. I need to go and get some of that. My sink looks nothing like that. It looks very dull. I'm going to want to keep this new sink shiny and pretty like yours! ;-)

wilson853 - I also liked the versatility the mat could be used as a trivet and rolled up for easy storage (though flat is probably easier). I like your idea of covering the entire bottom for washing and then all three could be stacked to the side when not in use.
