I've attached a quick sketch one solution for a much more modern version of your fireplace. As I don't know what color palette you're planning to use or your level of remodeling abilities I just dropped in a few elements that may or may not work for what you have in mind. However, I 'm sure you understand the design concept.

The most difficult aspect to this idea is that you would be doing the tear out of exiting cabinets, framing above the brick if necessary and installing the stone veneer

, which you can get free classes on from your local home center. The last item is a mantel and seating. If you feel like you can handle this portion of your project go ahead and do the install or ask a local handyman for a little assistance.

The simplest option would be to either reface the existing brick or paint the brick and paint out the cabinets and wall to a color palette you like.

If you can, I would extend the bookcases to the ceiling and paint them to match the kitchen cabinets.
