Why is it too heavy to hang? Is it the wall that can't take the load? It doesn't seem very big...I've hung huge mirrors in the past just using regular hanging equipment.

You can get heavy duty hardware to hang it from a wall stud. Just ask at your local hardware or home improvement store--they'll advise you on the best way to hang it.

The hardware on the back has buckled and I am so scared it will fall and wreck the new floorboards!

You should hang with butterfly screw hardware. You don't necessarily have to find the stud.

You can replace the hardware on the back of the mirror. Take a picture of the hardware, get an approximate weight of the mirror, and then head down to the local hardware dealer or woodworking shop and get their advice.

I'm surprised the hardware buckled, if it was the correct fittings. We have a huge mirror - about 2 metres x 1 - weighs in at 12kg! (26 pounds in your speak! ;). We fixed it with 2 speciality hooks, capable of holding 20kg each - both sunk into seperate wall studs - purchased from the local hardware. Then used heavy hanging wire over both. It's been up for 4 years now...no problem.

I also have another mirror with the same issue, but it's metal! Ideas?_

Teena, I have an antique mirror that weighs about 50 pounds hanging from my bedroom wall. It's been there for 12 years and hasn't budged. The back of the mirror has two heavy metal "D" rings screwed into the frame. On the wall, I mounted a single heavy-duty picture hook thru a stud. I then twisted a length of braided metal wire between the two "D" rings on the back of the mirror. The metal wire goes over the wall hook and this supports the weight of the mirror. Pretty standard installation for heavy artwork and mirrors. All of this hardware is available at one of the big box stores or your local hardware store. If your hardware has buckled, it's because the hardware wasn't sturdy enough to support the mirror. Just get yourself some heavier hardware. No problem!

How about a French cleat. They are sturdy and are really strong. You might need a carpenter to help, or maybe find a kit somewhere.

Home Depot has French cleat kits at affordable prices, or you can mount some legs/stair spindles to the bottom of the mirror, to help take some of the load off the hanging hardware.

It looks like the top of the frame is sturdy. You could hang it from each corner at the top, from the ceiling. If u can find an art store they have good looking kit for this. That avoids a weak wall, weak rear frame problem. The trick is finding the nice looking hardware.

If it's really heavy, use two hooks instead of one to distribute the weight more evenly.

Are you sure you want to hang a mirror that you will see first thing when you open the front door? I am not a feng shui expert, maybe one will chime in....but it seems that it scares the chi away or something of the sort. :) I have a super heavy antique mirror on the wall in my house- we used a bar hanger (two bars, one on mirror and one on wall- they slide together), it has never moved an inch.

The best part is you do not need to find a stud...honest. I hung a 350 lb (159 kilos) mirror on drywall with two hooks.
