need ideas for small outside back door fill in space

I am moving my back door about 10 inches and have that space to the left to fill in next to the back door. There is framing showing so can't do side panel window. To mill or match 75 yr. old grove cedar is probably too expensive so thinking of an artsy, brick-y, wrought iron or barn wood-y type panel to install in that space in my 1939 house. Any artsy or functional ideas?

That looks like 10" drop channel siding to me. Aka drop siding, channel siding. You can definitely still buy it and it's really not that expensive considering you don't have much to replace. I would stick with cedar if that's what you've got on the rest of the house. if you're painting it anyway and cost is that much of a concern you can get pine, but it doesn't hold up as well against the elements.

....Thank you! Some old timers just said it might have to be specially milled. We've got some lumber yards around here but I'm in So Cal. From just now looking on line, I see I should be in Tennessee or Texas!

you're very welcome. it may be tough in a rural area, but you should be able to find it if you've got some good local lumber yards. if not you can order it online from many different suppliers. pretty common in my neck of the woods though. best of luck!

wow! I just looked on CraigsList in Ventura and some junk dealer about 30 miles away has a TON of it at $10 per 15 ft. piece! I will run over tomorrow and figure out how to get it home! My county has about 300k people but I never would have thought about CL. I'm going to get a few boards and stash them away for siding repairs....where do I send your chocolate chip cookies!!

Siding tends to fade at a different rate depending upon the sun exposure. Hopefully what you find will fit; however, even if it does, you'll end up with a vertical row of seams that obviously look like a patch -- at least close up.

Instead of replacing the siding, you might consider putting a window where the door had been located and using wood painted the same as the rest of your trim to surround it.

Alternately, since this appears to be the back of your home next to some utility equipment anyway, consider building an outdoor cabinet affixed to that back wall that would cover and protect the utility equipment as well as hide the scar from the removed siding. These are usually built to store a bbq grill and/or yard tools and/or outdoor furniture and/or outdoor toys such as balls and bats and croquet sets, etc.

You could go ahead and buy replacement siding for the door space and still use the outside storage idea, possibly using an entirely different material for the actual storage closet, especially since you really need to hide and protect that utility box, etc., anyway.
