What about training some vines to go up the wall on the left side of the photo (garage wall?)? That would soften the large expanse of wall. If you do use vines, do some research and find a plant native to your area. Natives are the way to go because they are sure to grow well and you won't risk putting in an invasive species.

a shed dormer only if you need the light otherwise think the roof design is fine. If/when you replace the roof, go with architectural shingles bc it will add another dimension to your home.
Next I would paint the lovely main entrance wall a charcoal gray if that is the same color as your window trim - hard to tell in photo. This would create a wow effect and really announce the entrance to your home.
Mostly I think your landscaping could add the best bang for the buck. If budget allows, change the long, narrow walkway to a much wider one - perhaps some interesting stone and ending in a large, wide patio area at your door entrance area.
For shrubs - place a taller than the roof-line conical evergreen at the outermost corner of your house. Then, use some larger broadleaf evergreen shrubs along the solid wall and forward of that toward the path yet another but lower grouping of shrubs ending with an even lower cluster of some seasonal mix of perennial and annuals.

since your house has kind of a midcentury/modern look i personally would up the curb appeal to the front of your house? by adding some over sized modern house numbers to the right of the front door(photo below, from google), this would add some interest and would balance it out if numbers don't appeal to you a vertical flower bed would be great too! I would also go with a different paint color as the current one makes the roof look larger because they are similar in color. Maybe a charcoal to make the landscaping pop more. Also if your looking for a little more work adding a different type of siding like horizontal slats to one side could look great.

The roof looks like it's in good condition, but I think replacing the brown shingles with black shingles and re painting the exterior a more modern colour would do a lot. The style of the house fits with modern architecture but the roof colour/siding colour is way outdated for this style of house.

You should get rid of small front step and create elevated courtyard area with larger walkway leading to center of courtyard.

A roof over the middle of the house covering a stone front porch/patio one step down from the entrance to the home but using a clear greenhouse material for the roof to let the light in -- preferably a porch with a gable end or one with a curved or octagon front.

I don't think your house is ugly at all! It's really cool and has loads of potential. For sure add contemporary lights and house numbers. Here it is in a gray blue. I like the color charcoal on a house, but in your case it would just emphasize your roof, which isn't in pristine condition. A gray blue would be less stark & contrasty. The main thing would be to add a courtyard in the entry area and to landscape the blank wall. I've added an espaliered vine, though that might be too much upkeep in real life.

Landscaping, fresh paint colors, lighting, & address numbers -- then you've got yourself a beauty.

Something for you to consider for the house itself:

If you changed the upstairs windows out for a pair of patio doors and added a balcony inside, you could add a deck outside between the two front sides of the house.

Alternately, you could create a floor to another room between those two front wings of the house instead of a deck and add a gable roof facing forward. If you created the walls high enough on this addition, you could literally have a room with windows facing in all four directions, albeit small fixed casement windows facing back over the ridge.

If you actually think the house itself is ugly, it's likely the shape of the building itself, so, changing the color of the roof or building and/or cluttering up the yard with plants you don't have the time or inclination to tend will not help it at all.
