Got My Mangle

last modified: 11 years ago

Got my mangle, yesterday. Drove 1.5 hours way, and thought it was worthy of the purchase. I love domestic machines, always have. I counter offered a price and the seller agreed. We both got it into the back of my small SUV, on its back. Later I read not to transport that way, as the oil from the gearbox will leak. Days earlier I had asked seller if I could transport it that way and she said yes, that she had asked a mechanic friend of hers. Well luckily oil didn't leak out on my long trip home. I had it well padded though for extra protection of my auto.

Go home and DH wasn't available to help me get it out. SO I tried. I got it to within 4" of the ground and then dropped it on its back (accidentally), where the motor and gearbox are mounted. The gearbox lid popped off. Not much oil in there and what was in there was very old and dark and thick. Eventually DH got home and helped me pick the poor thing up off the ground. That 4" drop did nothing to the machine!

There are several websites that address this machine and the maintenance required. I tried it out after cleaning the gearbox and changing the oil with DH's help and knowledge, along with one website's tutorial. DH has tons of experience with machinery so any questions with the tutorial instructions, I deferred to DH for the answer.

The roller is about 24" wide. The roller cover is in very good condition but I will be ordering a new one off ebay. I wiped the cabinet down. Then I turned it on and ironed 2 pillow cases last night :)

I think that I will be able to do very many things with this machine, if I feel inclined. I am fairly dextrous. My miele dryer has a dry setting for "rotary iron". I'll be using that on sheets and duvets.

Enduring, congratulations, what a beautiful Mangle, very happy for you. I've never used one, however my local laundramat/service has an old one, a couple of older folks own the place and have told me to stop in sometime and they will give me lessons lol..anyway, have fun with that it looks great.

Livebetter, I really would have preferred a Miele, but the price was too much at this stage of my exploration with this type of ironing. I figured this small investment will be my test. I get the hebby jebbies with some old things. And I am experiencing it with this one. I will get over it though, I just need to get the new roller cover on there.

Mamap, I bet you would love this. Did you see my video with the woman ironing on one just about like this? She was a hoot. She was so adept at using it. I think it would be fun to go to the laundry and have them show you how its done. These machines are available all over. They are robust and if well maintained are still running well.

My machine has a lid, but it is still in the car waiting to be removed. It is mounted with hinges and tips back when you use the machine. I will have to pull this iron out from the wall while I am using it, so the lid might mount nicely and open without difficulty. It would be nice to have the lid on it between uses. The previous owner kept the lid off and used a sewn cover as a dust cover.

George, I hope it does. If I stall out on ironing at least I wont be out too much money. I'm thinking of inviting some neighbors over for wine, beer, and ironing :)

Congrats enduring on your new acquisition! Have fun ironing.

    Livebetter,

I draw the line at tea towels:-). Hard core indeed.

Congrats Barbara, What a cool find!! Always wanted a Mangle, although I know my health insurance would not be happy with my decision, LOL.

Curious...why do some old things give you the heebie jeebies? ;)

    Thanks Homepro and Larsi.

Larsi, I don't know why old things do that. I enjoy antiques and history, but for me personally, I have struggled a bit with them in the house. I think it is the layers of someone's personal dirt and musty smell that is the thing for me. I do remember when I was small and there were still hold overs of Victorian decor in my neighborhood, it would be very ugly to me. I am a child of the 50s and 60s you know. Old stuff outside doesn't do that to me much. Except in the fall when the leaves are brown and on the ground. The grass is brown and gray. Even though it is lovely it is depressing for me. I need the snow to cover it all. Then I dream of spring, enjoying the winter, knowing that all is protected under the snow cover. If I go to an antique shop by myself, I enjoy looking, but have to get out of there in 45 minutes or I feel sad, down, and a bit depressed. If I'm with loved ones, not so much. I can't stand being places that are poorly groomed :) Once I get to know the place better, I ease up though. Chicago is like that, full of grime and old. But it has a beauty too. Now that I've been there multiple times to visit our daughter, I'm seeing through the grime. There are SO MANY young people, I think that helps too. Everyone is very friendly there, so that helps. The old neighborhoods are really attracting a lot of 20-30 year olds. Lots of creativity happening.

@homepro01, I have friends that beg me to stop pressing them lol. They say life is too short. My Mom presses hers too. We like pulling a clean crisp tea towel out of the drawer. The rotary iron makes it a breeze really but I realize it's not for everyone ;)

@enduring -- Wonderful buy! You are so lucky to have a DH that can do mechanical stuff. But that mangle looks almost new. What I like is the sides that are completely open. My Miele isn't and wide stuff gets very bunched up.

It takes a bit of practice but you get very adept with the mangle -- like the woman in the video. And it's a great workout for the upper arms.

One thing with mine -- I sprinkle things ahead and get very organized to go production line when using it. When I was casual about it and left it on for a while my electric bill showed a marked increase. Made me want solar for sure.

Nothing like pillowcases and sheets ironed on a mangle. Such a luxury.

    Livebetter,

I iron all my clothes and linens. Can't sleep on sheets that have not been ironed. I have about 150 kitchen towels since we use them like paper towels. I would be committed to an asylum if I started ironing them. My family is already disturbed that I roll all my towels into little logs:-)

    I roll my towels also.

I am collecting a few extra laundry baskets for my production line Rococogurl :)

Today I have a load of sheets that I will dry on the "rotary" setting on the dryer. I sprinkled previously dried duvet covers that are very wrinkled.I am going to have a sit down and try this out while DH takes his nappy-poo.

The Open sides are a feature that is nice. The heating plate is sparkling clean. There were a few black melted something or other spots on it last night. But with some scrubbing and dishsoap it came up. Now perfectly clean.

I've never seen a Miele iron with steam but noticed Costco Canada has one with built in steam generator. That would make life just about perfect ;)

Hold up @enduring! Baskets let stuff dry out. I use Zip Lock XXL bags. They are laundry bag size, close up tightly, keep things moist and also can go in the fridge if I don't get through everything. They come in boxes of 3 -- so handy and they fold up and take no storage space.

But perhaps you have space for baskets. I just don't so I'm always either unloading or looking for something efficient. I also can see through them so nothing gets lost. I do have one laundry basket that was DDs and I "discover" things in there all the time. Perhaps I'm hyper visual though. I need to see stuff.

Whirlpool, That video is hysterical. I love it. Thanks for sharing! I love a good commercial. I didn't know the 990 came with steam. I wonder if it is offered in the US?

Linus, I will channel your ironing spirit when I sit and mangle :) This mangle will be good for small things too. I did some sheets and did both fitted and flat. I think I have got a system down now after I did a few.

Rococo, So you must be talking about stock piling ironing? I remember when I was a kid, my mother would roll laundry up, damp, and put it into the frig. I just spent about 1.5 hours doing a bunch of sheets that I sprinkled. I had them in the basket and it seemed fine. But I didn't let it set more than 2 hours. I actually got some of the things too moist. I didn't like the "rotary" dry on the dryer for these things. I will try the iron dry next time.

My ironrite spins pretty fast...let me go watch whirlpools video above...Mine probably goes near the faster speeds of the Miele. I don't have variable speed. I do have a lever that holds the roller still, while the object is in contact with the hot plate. That works pretty well for thick multi layered areas. The thermostat is not accurate. The cotton setting is too hot for cotton. Turning it down provided a consistent temp and worked better. I ordered a new cover off ebay today.

At least in Germany, Miele ditched the domestic rotary irons in favor of the Fashion Master system. I have something similar and like that fact that it's very fast, yet has practically no learning curve. But I do love the idea of a rotary iron. And pressed tea towels? Yes, please! That's what I started with as a four-year-old: standing next to my grandma, ironing tea towels and my grandpa's handkerchiefs.

Motha... has arrived! How about this public cold mangle from 1987? You can start the video at one minute in... unless you are interested in cringe-worthy Saxon accent. *shudders*

@ Whirlpool trainee...OMG Saxon accents. KILL ME. I lived in Dresden, and I SWEAR TO GOD, I had a German/Saxon dictionary. I was like...I'm German, living in Germany and I cannot understand what you are saying.

Harder than Bayern!!! and that sucks, but Bayern is my most fav part of Deutschland!!!!

I don't hear any accent, lol. Its all German to me. I can't believe I watched the whole German mangle movie Whirlpool! I am not watching the second one you posted because I've already watched that one twice :) Thank you very much for helping me with all this laundry stuff. So when you say "Fashion Master System" is that the fancy iron and board that has an air system in the board?

Thanks Larsi for clarifying the accents for me! I get it now.

And Whirlpool, I am taking that stand against drudgery! I'll teach my husband to use the mangle ;)

    Go, Girl Power! *lol*

Yes, the Fashion Master is that fancy ironing board with steam generator and inflatable/suction board. The fully-featured model also comes with a steamer... and a price tag that matches an upper end Miele washer. Very similar to the Laura Star. These systems are great - but definitely don't offer the "sitting by the fireplace, ironing" serenity a rotary iron has.

Larsi, so you're a fan of Bavaria? Don't you now also have Oktoberfest in the US? I think I'll have to send you a mail regarding accents.

    Whirlpool_trainee,

The fashion master is coming to the US soon. I reached out to Miele Marine earlier in the year and they are waiting for the UL certification. Maybe early next year:-) I wonder how different it will be from my Laurastar!

    Enduring,

I wanted to share my new toy with you. Maybe this will lessen my need for a steam rotary iron for now! It is a sprayer. It has a pump which is easier than a spray bottle and the spray pattern is perfect for linens. It is from a Swiss company called Birchmeier. They also have one that turns liquid gels into foam. I am trying that one for my bathroom cleaner. Now I need to make some linen sprays this weekend.

Hope you are having fun with your mangle.

Now that looks interesting @enduring. Amazon? Let us know how it works. Does it make your hand tired pumping or does it do the work?

Very easy to pump. It takes just 8 pumps to pressurize. I bought it directly from the US dealer. It cost roughly $30 but it is so much better than the other sprayers I have purchased in the past for pest control!

    link to manufacturer.

Thanks that looks very interesting. Is the US dealer in Kentucky, like the website indicates? DH gets frustrated with handspray bottles because they fail on him. He raises livestock (small herd) and he sprays the calfs and cows with fly spray in the summers. I am thinking this would make a great stocking stuffer :) I looked through the product line on the website, thanks for posting that Homepro! Of course I would need one for my linens ;)

    Enduring,

Yes I purchased from the dealer in KY. When my still backpack sprayer goes out, I will get a Birchmeier to replace it. I got the spray master with the P for chemicals. I think your hubby would love the product. The item took 2days to ship from Ky to Maryland.

    Enjoy!
