What else is in the room? Can we see other wall/entire space. You have all the furniture lined up against the walls, might need a new arrangement.

Regarding color, get a neutral sofa in beige or light gray and add 2 chairs with a pattern or in a solid color such as blue, orange, turquoise or even green

After you get your furniture add an area rug.

The room is 16x24. With a table with a lamp in front of a widow, a recliner chair then fireplace and door to outside.then the door to the kitchen with two chairs and a table between, next is two tables with the sofa between, and door to living room. Fourth wall has a hall to bedrooms, TV on wall with vcr and ect under Ina closed cabinet. A chair the door to basement.

Would gray or yellow sofa look best. Does such a small room have other choices of placement? The sofa and all chairs can go. I guess the red table can also go.

I'm thinking these colors for the room. If you can get past the old stuff in the background. Can't get it all out. I'll do a room arrangement for you, but wanted you to see some color before we get to far.

Adding some chairs and table between them. You could go with the light or the dark pair.

Now I'll do an arrangement for the room.

This is how I would arrange the room.

1. New sofa and chairs as shown. Bring the furniture in off the walls.

2. Current end tables and new lamps for ends of sofa and a coffee table or ottoman.

3. Get rid of red chair and get another for beside FP, slipcover wingback for bottom left corner with table and lamp for reading corner. I added some book cases or display cabinets for along that wall.

You really need a longer console for under the TV, but truthfully, I don't know if they make them that big :>) And it would be pricey.

A 10x12 rug for seating area.

Take down all your pictures off the walls and let's start over with hanging them. Also everything off the end tables. All the family pictures would look nice arranged on a new table behind the sofa.

Take a photo of the FP and we'll see if it needs a make-over also.

You don't need to replace your comfortable looking recliners without a good reason. I very much like high backed chairs and your wing back chair and red rocker left of the fireplace could work well with another color sofa.

Until you're ready to invest in a new sofa, you might try just changing the throw pillows. When you do replace the sofa, a tan or light brown or medium to dark gray would give you more of a neutral natural look that would go well with the chairs you already have. You don't want to try to copy the color of the recliners or other furnishings and get a mismatch -- coordinating colors would be preferable.

Try the ideas Susan 2494 have about furniture placement with your current furnishings. If you don't like that layout with the furniture you now have, you'll probably not like it with new furniture either.

A rug can help define a conversational grouping in a very large room and make a room seem warmer in winter, but in a room with a fireplace, carpeting or a rug is going to hold the dust and smell from the fireplace and take more effort to clean than your current flooring. Let how you live in the room decide if you want to invest in the expense of a large area rug or room sized rug.

While a single large pic above the sofa works with your current furniture placement, the other scattered about smaller pics and calendar don't seem to "fit" -- they seem to have been put on the wall to avoid having a bare wall. Don't do anything with them, though until you have your furnishings like you want them.

The table or cart to the left of the one recliner looks "stored" there. (I have a similar situation in my family room and have been thinking of replacing a waist high bookcase (that's actually an oak rolling cart intended for a microwave and once used for a tv but I've been using it for photos and photo albums). I'm thinking a large, tall corner curio cabinet (glass doors; interior light) could work better for both of us. A curio cabinet would let you display your family photos without needing to dust them and also serve as a place for other family treasures and mementos, trophies, nick knacks and the odd candy dish, candle holder and pretty vase not currently being used for those purposes.

If you opt for the corner curio, a floor lamp with table/shelf between the recliners would be narrower and likely a better fit so your recliner would not need to overlap the door opening to the dining room. You could repurpose the table and lamp between the wing back chair and high back red chair next to the fireplace as well as the cabinet between the recliners to another room and use matching floor lamps with the table/shelf for both then turn the red high back chair at an angle.

Not really fond of fabric on a door unless it is a full sheer affixed top and bottom over the glass panels.
