Kitchen Cabinet Decision

I've made a decision and am going in a different direction. I'm so excited. I found the most gorgeous sage green cabinetry, absolutely perfect for an old farmhouse kitchen. Style will be simple, Shaker style. I think they're going to be perfect. Here is a stock pic of the Pettingill Sage cabinet I will have in my kitchen - the island. Placing the order tomorrow! Quite a bit over what I had allotted but they are so perfect, they're the right ones.

Oh, wow, love the color and style. Agree: perfect!

Thanks, GG. That's actually not the style I'm going with, but it is the brand and color. This is the style I'm getting:

TY, kswl. Check out Kountry Kraft Pettingill Sage. It is the perfect, perfect farmhouse-kitchen sage green. Hit me like a bolt when I saw it. And yes, I agree, this house has so much wood in it, between the wide pine floors and the ceiling beams, and three ceilings...so I'm thrilled I found a painted cab I love.

Love it, Tib! I know you are getting excited!

I am going with overlay cabinetry, versus inset, even though inset is nicer looking. But every cabinet person I've spoken with tells me there are far more problems with inset cabinetry (and it's more expensive), and you have less open space inside, and since I rent my house out, I really don't need to invite problems and more repairs.

I really doubt it's even noticeable when they're not side-by-side anyway.

OP...excited...and broke! Sub Zero has not come through with the free fridge for me, despite my frequent mentions here! :-P. Lol. Like Aktillery and West Elm's martini table.

    Cheapskates.

Speaking of gorgeous houses, I'm off to Concord, MA, to pick up a dog. Love that town. Lived there 'til I was six and have always regretted moving. Concord in autumn...heaven.

    Later.

They are gorgeous! Can't wait to see your new kitchen.

Great color and I do love shaker cabinets. Are you getting a dog for yourself, or dog sitting?

We found a place that offered a 2% cash discount on our subzero, you may be able to find something like that if you shop around. Occasionaly when models change (not very often) you can get store demos at a slightly reduced price. But I'm told sales people usually buy those on behalf of friends and family.

Beautiful - I hope your tenants treat them as well as you will!

Love the color. I am curious as to why inset cabinets are more trouble. I have the original 1920s inset cabinets and I can't imagine an issue with them.

Went to Concord as part of our honeymoon trip in 1992. Love that town! As you say it is beautiful and I love the history attached to that part of the country. We are going back this coming spring.

Wow, what nice comments to get home to! So glad you all approve!

    Let me see:

    anitamo: dog sitting. I can't have my own dog because I'm a dog sitter! One of those life ironies! Concord was gorgeous, as expected;

kswl, I do in fact have a "connection" to the retail place where I'm getting my SZ and will be getting a 10% discount. No bad. Every bit counts, right? Esp. when you've gone @ $6K over your cab budget for cabs!

Linen, ordering them tomorrow, and they say 4 - 5 weeks. I'm patient, but I'm more concerned with timing everything so that I'm not w/o a kitchen for long. For example, don't want to have the floors put in next week, then have to wait for four weeks for the cabs to come in. I'm getting all that info. from everyone, and then I'll set up a schedule and hope I can get everyone lined up!

    sjhockey...me too!!!

Powermuffin, I'm not sure why inset cabs present with more problems. But each cab place I've been to has told me the same thing, that they do, and there's nothing in it for them to say that since they're actually more expensive. IF it was just me, I'd get them since I do like the way they look better, but with tenants...nope.

Yes, Concord is so gorgeous. I was even precisely on Monument Rd., heading out from the center of Concord to the Carlisle line, and it is just gorgeous out there, all farms and horses. So much history there, of course. I'm assuming you ate at the Colonial Inn when you were there last, but if not, make sure you do when you return.

TY, amc and errant, I think they will be perfect for an old farm outbuilding!

    blfenton, indeed it does! Lol.

Always nice to get affirmation! Thank you all.

Even though they're more $$ I think you'll be happy with them in the long run rather than the second choice wood cabinets you were going to settle for before.

Over in the kitchen forum they discuss inset vs overlay. Generally inset is more difficult to install because they have to fit perfectly within the opening and can easily become "offset." (that's my layperson's understanding) They are more expensive and they do have slightly less storage. In the right setting though they're more appropriate than overlay. But in your case, Tibbrix, overlay is the way to go esp considering you rent your place.

Exactly, Lisa. and like I said, I suspect it's one of those things that isn't even noticeable unless they're side-by-side.

I don't mind spending a little more when I know I have found "the one", have NO doubts at all, and that is definitely the case with these cabs, at least the color!

Tibbrix -- congrats on your choice. The color is beautiful and I'm certain it will turn out great.

I put in inset but if I did a part time rental, I would do full overlay. You can compensate for the lost space with simply a deeper cabinet, btw. Many lines offer up extra depth for "free" (Inset was "free" in the line I chose).

It's actually the inset cabs that have less inside space. I'm very excited about the pantry cabinet that will be installed, only 12" deep, but it will have plenty of shelf space, which I need. I don't like deep cabs at all. Kitchen, while having the same footprint, will be much more efficient.

Those are fantastic! I love the color and adore shaker in its timelessness and simplicity. I will patiently be waiting for your kitchen to come together. What color walls are you going with? The green would look nice with the rust colors you were thinking about.

    Congrats and excited for you!!

Not sure about the color, aktillery. I'm rethinking the counters now too and want wood (walnut) counters. I have to look into the cost, though. I can only get quartz in a gloss, which I Don't really want. I don't want granite or soapstone. Really want a dark brown for the counters.

Pretty sure I'm going to go with something in the browns for the wall, from deep to ivory.

These are the pulls I'm going with for the drawers and the Sub Zero, Amerock Candler, Venetian Bronze

I love the idea of the walnut counters. I think if you had that and your tile floor then you couldn't go wrong with a lovely cream. It would looks so beautiful. It would also help make your kitchen look a bit bigger and brighter! I am so excited!!

    Oh, yes!Great choice!

What about soapstone counters? Love, love the idea of walnut counters, but how's the maintenance?

Are you somewhere near Cape Cod? Link to CL: soapstone in Worcester

Interesting enough, NSM, I'm not too worried about the maintenance of wood counters. I love the versatility of wood and think it looks wonderful marred or not. In fact, that's one of the things I love about it. It gets better looking with wear, IMO! However, if it gets a burn mark or scratch, it's also very easy to repair, unlike the stone counters. I also like the fact that, of course farmhouses all had wood counters, so it would also be in keeping with the nature of the house.

Faves are Walnut and Wenge...naturally the expensive woods (at least Walnut is from the US. Wenge is African)! Could also stain maple, though.

Aktillery, you know me and rich deep browns (considering your Brainstorm Bronze, in fact!). Really unsure, but my kitchen is all uplighting, which is really beautiful with deeper tones.

Have only skimmed through the comments, but I am so happy you found "the one's". They say you know it when you see it, and those are beautiful. I can see why you'd go over budget for them. Who knows, maybe you'll find a way to make some of it up somewhere else and if not, well you only live once, right? They are different from the direction you were going in, but I think it's a great choice.

Perfect. I absolutely love that color and have been contemplating it or something very similar in my kitchen.

cpartist, they are Kountry Kraft, but go by other names as well. (Why do companies do that???). If you Google "Pettingill Sage Cabinets", they'll come up. They ain't cheap, though! Still, better than the Bremtown cabs I initially wanted. But I'm telling you, this sage is perfect.

@tibbrix -- I meant that inset cabinets can be made an inch or three deeper to negate the size difference, usually for no upcharge. They seem to recognize the space issue. But I too would worry about the hinges falling out of alignment and having to adjust them. The inside corners also seem to be a bit more susceptible to dings.

I so wanted green cabinets, but was afraid. Thus, plain white again (the last three kitchens in this home, I believe -- though I think it had a green period some time back in time).

If I decide I can't afford the granite I want, I may then decide on the green cabinets.
