I would use the mudroom area to build a closet. You have the right amount of space. You can combine a top shelf where you can put different baskets for gloves, hats, etc, then a pole for hanging and baskets of open shelves at the bottom for additional storage, Sliding doors would work. Nowadays they make some fabulous ones.
