Paul - I don't grow any Dyckia so I can't give you an ID based on any first hand experience; about all I can tell you is that brevifolia is a species and not a hybrid so you won't find any information about it on the B.S.I. Bromeliad Cultivar Register.

Has your plant flowered yet? The flowers are often a good indication of the identity of the plant and if you look at the flowers in the pic's on the FCBS site you will see they are an unmistakable brilliant yellow colour and displayed on a long spike well clear of the plant. If your plant has these it would certainly indicate it isn't an aloe which usually have flowers in the orange/red range.

All I can suggest is that you look at the pictures on the two following links and compare them with your plant or speak to other brom growers in your local area who may be able to give you more useful assistance.

Your plant is Brevifolia. A widely grown plant. One of the nice hybrids from this plant is called "Yellow Glow"
