My Pope John Paul II has been incredible!

I'd like to give this thread a little bump since I'm thinking about trying to grow Clematis here in Anchorage, Alaska. A lot of people grow the ugly species variety with the tiny white flowers here. But I'd like to take a stab at growing some show stoppers here in the Far North. I found a website that is claiming to sell some hardier varieties , and I'm wondering if anyone has tried the with success. Specifically, I'm interested in Polish Spirit, Perrin's pride and Avant Garde. The website is HummingbirdFarm. I'm technically in zone 3, but I think my microclimate is more like zone 4. Any thoughts?

I have Pope John Paul II which is technically zone 4 and it has grown really well here for the past several years. Nelly Moser is also pretty reliable, and so is Jackmanii. I don't have Polish Spirit but have heard good things about it. Make sure you post some pictures of your efforts!

LOL I guess I was telling the truth! I missed the picture I posted last year when first looking at this post! (gettin' old....)

I am by far not zone 3 but jackmanni superba grows very fast for me. Me thinks you would one in that pruning class so you don't have to worry about vine hardiness.

I have two Polish Spirits and they grow like crazy. I chop them down every year and every year they grow about 8-10 feet high and very bushy. I think they'd grow higher if we had a higher trellis.

Pope John Paul is like that too. It died back last year but rebounded really well. It would grow a lot higher too, i'm sure. This year i'm hoping to get it on an archway and with any luck, it will be as spectacular there as it is on the trellis.

Jackmanii grows well for me. I will purchase Hagley's Hybrid this spring, a group 3 clematis as well.
