I've noticed a few posts in the last week(s), inquiring about concrete countertops pro/cons upkeep pricing etc. so I am posting the following informational sheet that I include with all my initial consultations to those interested in concrete countertops.

Q: Who chooses concrete countertops?

A: Concrete countertops are a warm natural looking material that corresponds with the popularity of more natural materials like wood, stone, and brick. Concrete countertops are the most unique, personal countertop option because they are made from scratch for each client. To determine whether concrete is right for you, think about whether you believe that:

* You want something unique and personalized
* You want something that looks natural and has character
* You appreciate hiigh-quality, hand-crafted items
* Granite is too shiny, too formal, too common
* Synthetic solid surface materials look and feel plastic
* You need a color or visual texture that's not available with other countertop materials

If so, concrete may be right for you.

Q: Do concrete contertops crack?

A: Yes. Not always, but concrete countertops can develop hairline cracks. The cracks tend to be non-structutral and result from the natural shrinkage of the concrete. Imperfections are part of the appeal. In fact, hairline cracks and slight irregularities are a natural part of the wear and tear and will not affect the structural integrity in the slightest (such fine cracks are also too narrow to trap food and debris). And while hairline cracks can be patched, such attempts often look far more obvious that the cracks themselves. Most people prefer the aged appearance that this natural occurence bestows - in contrast to the cold and unvarying smoothness of plastic products such as Corian and Formica.

Q: Will concrete countertops stain?

A: Concrete countertops have sealers applied for water and stain resistance. (Left in its natural state, unsealed, concrete is porous and will stain.)

Q: Can you cut on concrete countertops?

A: No. Cutting on the concrete countertop won't hurt the concrete, but will damage the sealer, which can effect the sealers ability to keep out wated and stains. Cutting boards should always be used when choopping or preparing foods.

Q: What about placing hot pans on concrete coutertops?

A: Placing hot pans on the concrete countertops should be avoided. Concrete is very heat resistant, but the concern is damaging and/or discoloring the sealer. You can have trivets of stainless steel, brass, or copper built into the top, or you can use hot plates or a hot pad.

Q: How do I clean my concrete countertop?

A: Cleaning your contertop is not going to be any more difficult than cleaning any other type of countertop. Simple wipe up of spilled items will ease in the upkeep. Each countertop will come with full instructions on what and how to use for keeping your concrete countertop surface looking beautiful.
