Need Help With Kitchen Flooring

We are knocking out a portion of a wall to make a larger opening into our kitchen and to add a pantry. We are adding about 18-20 square feet in the process and need to put some flooring down. We are considering this space to be part of the kitchen. I have not been able to find a match for our kitchen tile. The flooring in the adjacent room is real wood. We are not willing to refloor either room so we are looking for a solution that will make the small space feel like part of the kitchen. The first picture is the space that is being added that needs the flooring and the second picture (a different room also being remodeled) is just to show you what the wood looks like. Ouch...not many options. You can take a spare tile around to different tile companies to see if they have anything that is similar to what you have. You would then use a decorative "trim" to help allow one floor to sit next to another.

A "wood" option is to lace in some hardwood into the existing hardwood to extend the wood floors by a few feet. Even though you consider this kitchen, it might be easier to run wood into the space. The problem with this option is the ENTIRE HARDWOOD must be sanded and refinished to get the old/new woods to look identical. That is a pretty big expense ($5/sf for sand and refinish + cost of hardwood + install).

Retiling the kitchen (assuming you have no way of finding "close enough" tiles and have no way of adding decorative tile trim) might be the simplest, cheapest, most appropriate option.

Yes, it does look like a conundrum. I had a similar issue with a client and using the lot info on the back of some loose tile was able to hunt down additional pieces. If your home is in a subdivision with a known builder, they may have some info on their supplier who might be able to help. Secondly, it's not evident in the pictures if the dining room floor boards run parallel to the kitchen or perpendicular. If perpendicular, there is a chance you could run new wood in the addition and tape off the existing wood and stain the new to match the old. Unfortunately, it's not super clear on how the removal of the doors and headers (some at a 90 degree angle) will make for a uniform transition between the 3 areas (garage access, dining room and kitchen). Perhaps demarcating those 3 areas with different materials might be an option using, say, a mosaic tile in the addition that coordinates with your kitchen tile.

Our contractor suggested that we cut out the wood in the kids bedroom closet and use that in the space. We would replace the wood with some tile. So we would have "matching wood" available. I like the idea of demarcating the space. Deb, conundrum is a good term for this situation! The wood runs parallel to the space. I do have a couple of loose pieces of tile that I found under the AC. Unfortunately, we were not part of a large "subdivision" instead there were a bunch of custom builders. Thanks so much for your suggestions. How would you go about using a mosaic tile to demarcate the space between the two areas?
