Pond Leak! Help!

I have a pond with a liner- it's been dropping a good foot of water a day lately- I noticed there is an area with damper soil so I initially thought it was the waterfall with a leak- I topped off the pond last night, and turned off the pumps. This morning I wanted to cry- it was down a foot. I have fish in it, and I also live in south Dakota- it's starting to get frosty in the morning and I really am worried once it freezes - I have heard about the milk trick, but is it safe for the fish? I don't see bubbles or anything on the perimeter where it would be leaking but The wetter dirt is behind my waterfall- I'm thinking there may be a tear in the liner under the waterfall- however, there's a bunch of rocks over the liner so I think I may have a task ahead of me :) Does anyone have any ideas? I would like to try the milk trick but idk if it's safe for the fish? Thanks so much!
