Need help with flooring

I have French beaumaniere limestone throughout my house, cut 16" x 16" square. We have a sunken living room and would like to replace the carpet with a hard surface. The current carpet is a light taupe. Our ceiling has sandblasted wood cathedral style ceilings with whitewashed wood French doors so the colors are light beige. I would like to add honed wide-plank wood floors in a medium color that has tones of the light in it although my husband says he doesn't want a variety of surfaces. Would some of the pros out there please advise what type of flooring would be best? I describe our style of house as rustic contemporary with a cross between Frank Lloyd Wright and Tuscan. The fireplace is grey stone. He wants to try to find a stone to match and do all stone but I think it would be too cold even with rugs.
