Jade leaf propagation update & questions

Hi all,

I got some good guidance w/my 1st post about this but since these are my only leaves (I don't own a jade plant) I really want to do it the best way I can so I will have at least one plant to enjoy:) I tend to over think things & appreciate all of the guidance I have received so far! The one leaf I can see the easiest does have small leaves starting<<<happy dance! Didn't want to disturb them too much w/o further guidance.

(Both pics = same leaf)

I want to see how long I can/should leave these little ones in the container they are currently in (was the only thing I had on hand at the time). It's plastic (6" long, 4" wide & 2&1/2" deep) with a bunch of small drain holes. Total of 9 leaves 5 of which have roots & 1 w/roots & tiny leaves (not 100% sure if any others have leaves starting). Some of the roots are a tan color & hard to the touch the others are white/clear (I can take more pics if needed).

*When I should move them into a pot(s)?

*Should they be put into individual pots or all in one?

*What size pot(s)?

*If moved into a pot(s), should I lay the leaves on top of the mix & cover the roots w/a bit of mix like I have them now? If not how?

*At this point what is the best lighting for them? They are currently in northwest(ish) kitchen window that gets a lot of indirect natural & florescent lighting.

*When should they be put in a south facing window/full light/supplemental lighting? I've been using a spray bottle every other day to moisten the mix around the the leaves.

Any input/advise would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

I am sure someone more knowledgeable than myself will come along shortly, but these are looking good! I would keep doing what you are doing, and leave the little plantlets alone until they are big enough to handle. I think the two leaves in the top middle of the picture may be too spent to propagate, but I am not sure.

    Yay little plantlets!

    • I would leave them until they are much much bigger and the old leaf has fallen off.
    • Pots are up to you, just keep them small because the plants are tiny. I like combining my cuttings/plantlets to save space.
    • When ready to be repotted, they should have good sized root systems. Plant like a normal plant.
    • As they grow, watch for etoliation. If they start stretching and reaching, you may need more light. In higher light they may grow slower, but will also be much more compact.
    • A bit of experimentation will help you figure out where the best spots are. When the plantlet leaves start colouring up (reddish on the edges) then I wouldn't go much brighter.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the help :)

Kim: I thought the same about those 2 leaves but they both have roots...so we'll see:)

ewwmayo: thanks for all the tips/advice!

One of my main concerns was since they are all in the same container & they only have about 2&1/2" for root growth/space they wouldn't have enough room to grow w/o the roots being crowded or growing intertwined?

I think you still have time. 2.5" root growing space shouldn't limit your plants and your mix looks like separating roots should be fairly easy.

Here is one of my propagation pots where I am finally thinking about separating:

Let me know if you want me to show what the roots look like, I might do the repotting tonight.

I want to see roots, please!

    Yes please :)

Yep, leave 'em for now. Perhaps sprinkle a bit of Turface atop the mix, just lightly covering some of the roots. Then spritz with water until the roots are really anchored in the mix. After that, begin slowly watering the overall mix.

Thank you for taking your time to post this & answer my ?'s! I will have to take a look on my laptop tomorrow so I can view the photos larger. Looking at your plants makes me realize even more that I'm in desperate need of a better lighting/set up than what I currently have. My plants aren't as compact as they should be. Yours look great...exactly what I'm shooting for! My mom stopped by today, as I was showing her my plants & everything I'm trying to propagate she asked me if I've thought about birth control methods for them...lol. I'm guessing she noticed I'm starting to run out of places to put everything<<<addicted! Thanks again:)
