Dining room challenge - Update the look while keeping the furniture?

Looking for new ideas to update the look of this room. I am not painting or putting slipcovers over the chairs. I can recover the chairs, and replace the rug, curtains, chandelier (I already removed it). I would like it to look less traditional, if possible. I will either lighten up the china closet or remove it and add a lower piece. This rooms adjoins the kitchen, where I place to remodel with off-white painted cabinets.

Here are some chandeliers I like:

Can anyone show me the room with the rug, chandelier, and a fabric change photoshopped? Thanks.

Consider taking the china cabinet away and replacing with mirrors or artwork with a touch of color. Also, an updated rug would do wonders. Great space tho! For more inspiration, check out our projects!

Morrone interiors, Yes, the China closet can go. But I need to replace it with a server or something for storage. I like the rug and chandelier above your posting. I am recovering the chairs and replacing the curtains with fuller ones. Also replacing the shades with blinds.

What would you like to have in storage there? Would a nice bar cart work?

Not really, I have a bunch of stuff in there that I would rather hide.
Maybe something rustic to break up the traditional look?
I'm wondering if a black buffet would work in that space. I know you wanted some black in the room. And find fabric for the chairs with cream, black and green?

I would cover the chairs with a solid or a textured fabric to tone down the traditional styling.

    For your consideration:

Center your china cabinet along the wall -- not have it shoved up against the outside wall. Mea culpa -- see the light switch now; never mind. You could add color to your very neutral room by adding a colorful basket or large bowl or other decorative piece atop your china cabinet.

Lose the old fashioned dining room area rug; embrace your beautiful hardwood floor.

Lose the too bland colored curtains.

Unless you opt for wood shutters -- either painted or with a natural wood finish -- choose long drapes that reach within a couple inches of the floor. Do, however, keep the mini blinds to control light and provide privacy after dark when your lights are on. If you invest in a double c curtain rod, you could add some sheers and use tiebacks for the drapes or hardware that serve the same purpose as tie backs -- either of which gives you an opportunity to choose your new style.

The first pic of those you posted that you might like for your new dining room light is the best one. Alternately, consider a modern ceiling fan with light.

Since your china cabinet and four of your chairs are already painted wood anyway, and since they appear to be in great shape, don't replace them but do update them by repainting them your new favorite color. Don't choose white or off white or cream or yellow or pink -- or anything with a pink or yellow hue. Opt instead for blues or greens -- whichever suits your taste -- and, if you choose new drapes, choose one of the colors in the drapes for painting your china cabinet and chairs. Alternately, shades of gray could work for your furnishings if you chose a modern light fixture with black and silver colors; however, if you go gray, make sure you have some bold color in addition to gray in your drapes.

Do keep the china cabinet. A half cabinet sideboard will be a downgrade.

You could paint the inside of the china cabinet one color and the exterior a different shade of the same color. Choose your favorite of the two shades of your china cabinet color for the four painted chairs.

Please don't paint the table -- it's a plus for your room as is. If you opt for a ceiling fan, and unless you choose a much more modern one, see if you can find one with fan blades with a similar finish.

For the holidays, find some holiday themed sun catchers for the glass doors of your china cabinet. If you find you like them, you might find that collecting sun catchers for your windows becomes a new hobby. They can add much needed color to a room for those of us that tend to choose neutral colors for the more expensive items (there is a wide price range for stained glass sun catchers) , and, as an added bonus, sun catchers are a decorative item that can easily be changed according to season and mood.

Something else you might consider for both your window and patio doors is vertical blinds -- especially if you want a more modern look. The vinyl ones are relatively inexpensive and come in a wide variety of colors. Until I downsized homes, I had them on three patio doors and found them to be very practical.

I tried to get them all together, sorry, couldn't get the fabric in so used another instead that's close. At least they are all together in one area so you can see how they look together.

Ditch the curtains and blinds; add wider blinds in a wood grain. Get a new oriental rug with green and at least a touch of a brighter color, like a truer red or yellow. Paint the china cabinet a light shade of the bright color in the carpet. No need to repaint the walls. Recover the striped chairs in complimentary pattern/colors.

Look online at Home Decorators. They have tons of rugs! And be sure to get the rug first, then choose the new fabric for the chairs.

Just took a quick look at Home Decorators and found this one.

I like this one too, but not the look I was hoping for. I still can't find anything quite like my inspiration photo. I like the softer multi green tones with the black trim.

Why don't you email the design shop that did the room and ask where you can get the rug?

I did, it was a hand made one of a kind rug :(

The rug in the inspiration picture looks like one of a kind hand-made piece, not mass produced. Visit a local oriental rug merchant and see what they say.

I seem to have two of these posted, not sure how to link them...

I lightened up the China cabinet, painted the handles silver, cleaned it out, rearranged some stuff inside. It may need a little glaze to soften it. No on to the fabric. The big piece that's covering the chair looks very blah in person. Thoughts everyone?

Why not just leave them? The green stripe looks nice with your new rug:)

The stripes are gold, black, and burgundy. No green.

Wow, on my screen they look like they match perfectly! Guess that proves you can't trust the colors on your screen! Anyway a stripe with the proper green and cream would look good!

Little hard to gauge all the fabrics, but I do like the one right in the middle. Looks like soft gold, taupe. 3rd from the left? Looks good with the white chairs and the wood and ties with lighter cabinet and the ivory in rug. Too bad they don't have in pale green.

I agree with you Susan , I also like the cream woven in the middle but am really reluctant to say because I now don't trust the color on my screen!

    Now I'm liking the check....

When you narrow it down (or before), can you get larger sample pieces?

If the big one that is blah came in a cream/white or green, I think it would be a winner. Can you get more samples in lighter colors.

I'm changing directions again, looking at replacing the end chairs with two new upholstered chairs. i'm afraid that I may not like the chairs after spending over $100 to recover each one. I know, I'm crazy.

Not at all, seems like a great idea!
New curtains, removed chair rail, painted wall bottom to match top. Working on end chairs.

Wow, great transformation. Looking good. Just hem the curtains, they should just kiss the floor. :>)

I chalk painted the fabric on the end chairs. I'm surprised how easy it was. Thoughts?

I've never heard of this technique! It looks good but is it durable? How does the fabric feel?

I made my own chalk paint (found recipe in the internet) by mixing good quality satin paint with calcium carbonate (found on the internet) (4 parts paint, 1 part calcium carbonate mixed with enough water to form a smooth paste), sprayed down the chairs with water, then just painted with a paint brush, two thin coats, letting each coat dry in between. I wiped the excess off the wood, since I couldn't take the tops off. If I would have watered down the paint more, they would have been a more transparent, which I think would have looked better. I lightly sanded them smooth with a fine sandpaper, and applied some minwax paste finishing wax, which gave them a little shine. They feel soft and smooth. If I apply more wax, they start to look like leather. I'm now ready to tackle the other chairs, but can't decide on a color. I'm also considering changing the color of the wood to something whiter. I saved about $200 by not recovering those chairs.

I think I want to paint the brown wood on the chairs to match the paint on the white chairs, maybe even lighter and lighten them all up. Also, I need to paint the fabric on the four white chairs, but having a hard time deciding what color. Thoughts?

    last modified: 10 years ago

Find a shade of green to accent the rug. My suggestion is that you leave the wood on end chairs as is since the table is that color. I also like the white wood chairs as they are now. I think it gives more interest to the room rather than painting them white like the cabinet. Paint the seats first and then decide if the wood needs changing.

Curtains shortened, gold fabric is now green. Update on the beige chairs, the fabric now almost feels like vinyl, where it used to be more like satin. Not sure I would recommend this for all fabrics (unless you were ready to trash it anyway, like me). The other chairs are more of a tapestry, and they feel just a little different, slightly rougher. It was much better fabric to paint. I also only put one really watered down coat on. I also added more white stuff in the china closet. I think it's time to move onto the living room.
