Guest bedroom

We just painted our basement level guest bedroom a soft silver, blue. Does my new art work above the bedside tables?
I also need a new overhead fixture, bedside lamps, area rug and any other decorative touches! Ideas welcome! We are going for a coastal feel in this room. Thanks!

I recommend hanging the mirrors so that the mirros and window tops on are on the same horizontal plane. So, tops of windows and tops of mirrors are same height.

Same height before or after trim?

I know you want to hang your mirrors only once. But, that may not be possible. I think pre-plantation shutters, it would look best to have the mirror tops and window tops the same. This will help eliminate the window as a focal point (window not that appealing right now).

After shutters, it would be more acceptable to have the mirrors slighty lower than the shutter height. However, we don't really know where the trim/shutters will be. I would recommend that more shutter/trim be added to the bottom/sides of window than to the top to fill in the empty space below and to the sides of the window. This will result in wall behind part of the shutters, but it will look fine.

Finally, if you hang the mirrors below the window height, there isn't much room to hang them enough below to see a difference. Hence, I think they will just look "off".

You might try taping them out to see what you like.

How does this look? Is it weird that there is more space between the night table and the mirror than there is between the ceiling and the mirror?
  • PRO

It looks good. No, it does not look weird that there is more space at bottom than top. Your eye is going to go to the top, not the bottom. Once you place the lamp there, you will not be looking at the bottom much. If it really bothers you, consider adding a large coffee table book under the lamp. This will visually "raise" the height of the nightstand.

Looks good wicked. By the way, love the bench at the end of the bed!

The nightstand appears to be moved too close to the bed. I would place the table under the other window and move the bench back to the wall.

The mirrors look great!! Throw is perfect. Great improvement. See how the mirrors aren't really a huge reflection of the closet? They just add needed brightness and reflection. Coming along nicely.

Now I see the coast and smell the air... :)

end result worth it. I like the bench at the end of the bed but think it would be nice for something under the window too

not weird because you don't have the lamps back yet

    Some tweaking recommended

-move bench to under art (bench looked good there and worked under art. Table currently under art looks contrived and too many tables are close together).

-move table to under window (window looks odd and ungrounded.

    -place poinsettia on table.

-I would leave window with nothing in it or add a grouping. Add matching grouping to other window.

-change dark pillow on bed to white/white with blue trim. Navy pillow fades away and adds too much dark.

Please turn the open side of the pillow case toward the center of the bed. Are those Euro-sized pillows. I think you need a third pillows the size of the existing 2.

Looks nice. I like the staked frames too.

I think you should decorate in terms of the table proportions, not window heights.
You mirrors should fall about 8-10 inches above the night stand.
The bottom staked picture should be 8-10 inches above the table and have 2 inches between the frames.

Overall, your room is coming together nicely. Love the rug as well.

Thank you everyone for all your help! I had a guest for two nights earlier this week and she loved the changes. Said the room was very polished and inviting. Merry Christmas everyone! I appreciate all your great help. Enjoy the holiday.

I've been researching trim work. I really like the look of photo 2, but if want to do outside mount shutters, am I better off with something simpler and flush?
  • PRO

The answer is "yes". If you went with #2 and added outside mount shutters, you'd have 2 options

    1) place the shutters totally outside the trim area. Of course, this would totalluy hide the trim......so what would the point be of adding trim you like?

    2) Mount the shutters on the trim. But, then you'd have a lot of detail to work around with mounting the shutters. For example, the bottom horizontal trim would need a cutout in order to accomodate the shutters.

I don't think you need any shades at all. Just the shutters.

I agree. What's the point of beautiful trim if the shutters hide it. So now I'm wondering, should I go with:
    1) outside mount shutters on no trim (or very basic trim.)
    2) or beautiful trim and inside mount shutters (or possibly just wooden blinds)?
Thoughts? Maybe it's just my trim research, but suddenly detailed trim work seems like a beautiful thing!

Wickedwhite, I have only sills on my windows with a trim piece under the bottom of the sill (no other trim). I did outside mount shutters on some windows (they're expensive!). The window looks very trimmed with the outside mount shutters and I think that would be a good option for you as it would increase the window size as far as looks.

Thanks Ann. I so appreciate your insights. Could you possibly post a picture of what you have? I'm struggling to visualize so many options. :-)
  • PRO

I agree with Ann. Keep the following in mind also

-inside mount will be more expensive, since they have to be custom-sized to your window

-inside mount will block more light, since the frame will cover light inside the window. With outside, the frame can sit mostly outside the window pane.

-consider the style of the windows of the rest of your house. You don't want these to look oddly different.

WW, this is a really big window (and 4 shutter panels), but I also have the same shutters on a very small laundry room window (and 2 shutter panels). The frame just kind of sits on the existing sill and the trim piece under the sill was the only previous trim. So, see how these outside mount shutters kind of form their own trim? A window guy measured mine and I think they were custom to our window sizes.

Thanks to you both. Ann.. Lovely shutters. Really nice.
CDR.. I'm not overly concerned about different window trim in the basement. I'm not overly happy with the trim on our upstairs windows and am looking to the basement fir an opportunity to start fresh!
How important is it for window and door trim to match? What common features, if any, should they have?
  • PRO

The window and door trim don't have to match, but they should work together. There should be some common elements.

From what I've seen of your door trim, either choice you are considering would work. Both have simple lines.

Would either of these lamps work? Taupe one also comes in white.

    Here's the white.

    Love it!

The white is very pretty and I think it will contrast nicely with your wall color.

    Pretty.

Sorry, I like the glass post better. Gives me more of a coastal feeling. So airy as well. They will be less likely to obstruct the view through the mirrors in the back.

Sorry to through more stuff in the mix, but I think a floor lamp like this would actually be awesome! The base tucks under the nightstand and keeps the nightstand free for your guests to place stuff on top. It will also look like the lantern lights on the boat and reflect beautifully in the mirrors...honestly, even the table one looks nice (got the picture from Target). This will look awesome with the shutters too!

Ikea also has a few lamps that could make a splash in your guest bedroom.

This choice could add a nautical feel as well. It's pretty, sophisticated and unexpected. Reasonably priced too!

Thanks azotova, but I want something a little softer for this room. These white lamps are pretty good. I'm not loving the overhead fixture or the throw at the end of the bed. (It's too skimpy.) Im still looking for a white rectangular pillow for the bed with navy trim. And of course.... shutters. If I get outside mount, how big can I go? I hope to have them open as much as possible.
Like the pop of red in here too. Not sure what to put on the console now?
If you're going beachy I would swap out the bedding for white - a nice contrast to to your wall colour. Also possibly a wide slat "plantation" style blind in white for the window. Pictures will look grouped together anywhere in the room. Taller lamps with drum shades, and ceiling fixture also with drum shade in cotton or linen.

I think the shutter size is basically the same as the window size and it's just the frame that makes the window a little bigger looking. I think it would look odd if it was much bigger and the walls were to show when the shutters were open.

  • PRO

If you are keeping the mirrors there, the shutters will not be able to be much larger than the window is now. You'll need some "breathing room" between the shutters and the mirrors. I agree with what Ann said.

However, one way you might want to steer from this is the height. I don't think you want the frame shoved against the ceiling. So, you might have to to have some wall showing on the bottom. I think it will still look great.

Bench area: art is hung too high. Recommend you place the pictures side by side. The center of the art shoudl be approximately in line with the bottom of the window.

Throw: agree it is too short. If you are liking the red, consider a red pillow or red throw. But, I would also repeat that lighter blue color from the pillows.

Console table: you need a lamp there. Maybe a sailboat.

    New lamps look really good.

Great point CDR. I was intending to lower the art. (It was hung when we tried the console under it.) if I place then in a row, they will extend beyond the bench by about eight inches on either side. Is that acceptable?
As for the throw, I'm considering getting that white coverlet I tried earlier... Either that or a heavy wool blanket. I think I need something with more weight than what I have now.
I'm open to suggestions for the console. Will keep an eye out for Sailboats..

I actually think the art looks good as is. A pillow on the bench was an excellent touch too.
Love the new lamps. The room is coming together.
In terms of red, have you considered adding blush pink in the mix? A lot of the coastal theme interior design uses white, blue and pink. I think a blush pink throw would look nice.

In a perfect world, you may have bought art that stayed within the width of the bench, but that is what you have and it will look fine. The eye is drawn to the art, not the bench. Having the large red lantern on the floor visually extends the width of the bench anyway.

The bed pillows look sort of sad behind the blue pillows. I would consider moving the blue pillows toward the edges of the bed and placing the new white and navy pillow in the center. The new pillow seems like it should be the same size as the existing pillows. Are those Euro sized pillows?

The lantern in the window is too small and lonely. I would recommend nothing in the windows or something large.

    Agree, the throw looks skimpy.

Great that CDR Design pointed out the lantern. I think it will look nicer on the nightstand. You can stack a couple of interesting/bright books on the nightstand and put the lantern next to then or on them. Think of something like this.

Great advice! I will try the books. I am still in search of that new pillow. And yes.. The blue ikat are 25" or 26" wide. My dad has offered to trim out the windows.. So I might start there before ordering the shutters..?
I just started a new thread on my basement and would appreciate your advice over there. There is another tiny window like this one to figure out. Should I also do shutters there or are drapes more appropriate? Thank you!
