If I think of some of the "rules" for choosing a table lamp, the one in the picture above is too big. But I like it! So much for rules. However, if the lamp is to be used for reading, then you want to watch your inches. Sit in the chair and look at the lamp--I'd want the base of the shade to be pretty darn close to the level of my eyes. I don't want to see the bulb, but I do want mximum lighting shining on my book. In general, place a lamp on a table that makes sense for it's proportions--this lamp could use a larger table. And I always choose a lamp with a 3-way socket for more lighting options, although a lamp shop can make that adjustment for you. Tiny lamps only function as a spot of light or accent, so place them in areas where that's all you need.
