I can't guess what it is, but if you still have the sticker or remember the name of the producer, you can contact them and ask the name of the tomato. I did that with a heart tom that I got from a display of Houweling toms. They were nice enough to email me back the name of the heart from my description since it didn't have a sticker on it, but was part of their display.

There is a produce code on it the tomato (3423) . It just says "heirloom tomato" no variety name. The name of grower is VEG - FRESH. I found their web site. They have a general category for heirlooms but won't mention the variety names. I emailed them asking the name. I also attached the picture of the tomato.

We will see if they respond. They have also greenhouses in CA and Canada.

Looks like Black Sea man tomato? My grocery store has ones that look just like that, nice taste.

I googled and looked at the images , whole and sliced. I think you are right.

Tomato Fest describes it : DTM 75, Determinant , 12 to 16 oz fruits.

The one I bough was about 12 oz.

If in fact it turns out to be a BSM then $2.90 spent on it is well worth it. I enjoyed the tomato and saved lots of seeds from it. I can share if anyone wants a few.

I'll wait to see if the grower responds.

I did a google search and found this image of Black Seaman. It looks just like what I had.

Look at the texture and color. It is brownish outside the seeds pockets but light pink inside.

Anyway. I have saved seeds and will definitely plant one next year. This and Black From Tula will be my two black tomatoes. My CP did not do well this year so I won't grow it again.

Nice! It's a good tomato, even the grocery store ones are not utterly terrible, so I'm sure your home-grown one will be great. I'm sure you'll post updates about how it does. If it does well, I may consider trying it, it was well liked in these parts.

If you read my last post in "Black Tomatoes ..." thread, you will see that there will be a gang of 5 brown/blacks in my garden , competing. Black Seaman and Indian stripe will be the first timers. Black from Tula has to work harder.

O, well. didn't hear back from the grower.

So I'll just call is BLACK SEAMAN for now. We will see how it does in my garden next/coming season.

This came in a box of Mini Heirloom " that I bought at Trader Joes.

After some googling I found the following

It is called "Black Vermissage", only sold at Double Helix Farm. It is described as Mid Season, indeterminant, from Russia. .

What do you think ? are they close ?

I got a free pack of Black Vernissage from Baker Creek with my seed order. I haven't grown them yet. They have a picture of them sliced on the website so you can make some more comparisons. I picked up something similar this fall, I think it was Safari or Black Zebra.

There's so many varieties that it's hard to figure out what things are!

The tomatoes grew very big and dark in colour, and a completely different taste.

the product label called them a black russian

If you look at the tomato in the picture next to the coin, you'll that it is large grape size not even saladette size. Black Zebra looks a bit bigger and more roundish.
