The floor certainly looks to be end grain 4x4, but I highly doubt it. End grain cuts would not be durable enough even with a hardwood and not provide enough surface for toung and groove. 6x6 might work, but you'd still have the durability problem and splitting issues. I the past as a contractor, I have had many strange requests from homeowners looking for different, unique solutions for a hardwood floor, everything from OSB to MDF, which I did and both were striking and beautiful with sanding and a high gloss finish. MDF had a look not unlike a very high gloss cork an OSB turned almost orange with the application of several coats of poly. If I was approached with this job, I would suggest using hardwood plu and routing the T&G. The smaller the tile created though would create structire issues of peeling up or becoming an uneven surfaceas it aged. The easiest low cost flooring install I fabricated for a lient had my crew creating a hardwood ply floor with 1'x2' T&G birch tiles with a 1" overlap which were staggered and stained 3 slightly different different shades prior to instalation and then assembled with grain traveling in different directions. We used an oil based poly to finish which added additional warmth and a surface not unlike a basketball court.

End Grain Flooring is a very unique form of flooring that has been used throughout Europe and later in American history for one particular goal: durability. End grain floors were a traditional floor covering in factory buildings, heavy traffic commercial buildings, museums, bridges, board walks and even on US roads still in operation today. They absorb energy, noise and the angle of cut allows for the growth rings to resist scraping and general wear much more effectively than traditionally flat sawn or even quarter sawn boards.
