Karbon Sprayhead Disassembly

Thank you, ci-lantro. I did just what is described in the link you shared, but I now need to disassemble the sprayhead itself to clean the filter inside. That's where I am stuck as I cannot figure how to do it. I read a comment on Amazon from a person who explained that a white part needed to be removed in order to access the three-part filter inside. I am assuming the white piece she was talking about is the spray control button, but I don't see how it can be removed. Any idea?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, busy week so far! DH says you don't touch that button - the end unscrews he thinks. You use the little red tool which came with it. Tonight, we'll take it apart and document the process.

Sherri1058 - that's not ringing a bell - I don't know that I ever watched a full episode of that:)

@breizh910, if you haven't figured it out yet, you may want to consider calling Kohler customer support. Unlike many companies, they have a department of people who actually know their products that are quite helpful. I've called them many times.

Also, if you need any part for that faucet (specifically valves), be sure to call Kohler. They'll send you the new part for free. The only things that I've ever had to pay for were replacements for some push-down drain covers that had gotten nasty. I've gotten at least three faucet valves and two shower valves (our water is kinda hard and my recirc system [that they know about] doesn't help).

The plumber installed my faucet and discarded the box, so I don't have that little red tool you are mentioning. If at all possible, a couple of pictures would be most welcome!

breizh910 - Here goes!

Before you start: Cover/close drain - so you don't lose set screw and assemble your tools. These came with the faucet (5/64th allen wrench)

1) Pull spray button out

2) Push white button down reveled when spray button is removed, and pull outer shell towards you, to get to the set screw

4) Pull off spray head.

5) Push white button down and pull spray head out of outer shell. (Spring stays in outer shell).

6) Pop red tool on front of spray head and unscrew (counter clockwise).

7) Push from front to push out filter.

8) Use xacto knife to carefully pull of plastic screen.

9) Rinse filters under faucet, backwards. (Grey on top)

I will contact Kohler's customer service on Monday and ask if I can purchase that little red ring that I do not have. I can't wait to get this fixed, the slow flow has become such a nightmare. I have to brag about Kohler Company for a minute! I called their customer service this morning. They are sending me that little key ring needed to unscrew the filter, free of charge! Can't wait to get it fixed!

Good to hear about Kohler - barbaja99's reply made great sense. Heck, they'd probably replace the entire inner assembly, if you asked. When you called, did you just ask for the red thing or did you talk about the reduced flow (worth a call back to see what they say).

When it comes to this faucet (and for that matter, mulching leaves (organic matter) vs. blowing or raking), I turn into the kind of person willing to walk the neighborhood, knocking on doors and spreading the good word :) LOVE it, but the filter does get clogged. Oldbat2be, you're going to have to tell me what KAW means! It took me 2 days to figure that DH meant "dear husband" (well, I think so! I am French and after 17 years in this country, still a little slow with abbreviations!)

When calling Kohler, I asked only for the key ring, but mentioned the lower flow. I was assuming it came from the clogged filter anyway, and got no other explanation from the customer service lady.

This afternoon though, the flow, which had been greatly decreasing over the past 3 weeks, became a trickle. I couldn't wait for the key ring to get here any longer. I was able to unscrew the head without it, cleaned the filter (that wasn't bad at all) and put the head back together. Still a trickle. When my DH (!) came home, he unscrewed the top part of the head and found that the filter there was totally clogged with calcium. He cleaned it, and my faucet is now working like it did the first day! This is the busy part of the year for my business, I can't afford to have a non-functioning faucet. The top part was very tightly screwed on, he had to use a vice to unscrew it.

I guess we'll have to clean both filters regularly!

Seems like we are not that different: you walk the neighborhood and I make big batches of toffee to thank, not only my customers, but people who help me along the way! Let me know if you change your mind, I'll be happy to drop a box in the mail for you! I would never have taken the faucet head apart without your help (too pricey of a faucet to play around with it!) I, too, LOVE this faucet. A regular cleaning is a minor inconvenience!

Half the fun of this site is figuring out the acronymns - KAW=Kitchen At Work. Congrats to your DH - while my DH was taking it apart for the pictures, he was trying to remember the other thing he cleaned regularly - that must have been it! Now I can remind him that it unscrews. Greetings! I've enjoyed reading your posts. I too need help with my Karbon faucet: The joints have become lose and I can't figure out how to tighten them. Is there a special Kohler part for that?

Yes, I'm pretty sure one came with the faucet. I looked but couldn't find ours. Suggest you try Kohler Customer Service, they are very helpful. From their site:

Thank you so much for this post! We have a Karbon faucet in the bathroom which has never had very much water pressure. Lately it has declined even more. I cleaned it this morning and am amazed by how much water pressure there now is!

Oldbate: Thank you for doing a well explained post. I also found a good video that helped clean out the main section of the spray head. This is what I needed to do with my two karbons I have in my kitchen. I was ready to switch out my kohler karbon faucets because of low water pressure until I found this video. No where in the kohler web site does it talk about having to cleaning out the spray heads periodically. Mine now works as good as new after cleaning. One tip, be cautious screwing the last little nib (screw). If you do not have holes lines up perfect on head to faucet you could damage the small "o" ring on the spray head.
