Can lights are for overall lighting and above an island I like pendants for a bit of bling also can lights in higher ceilings don’t seem to give enough light over a work surface IMO so I would do pendants over the island even if you have cans in the kitchen too.

I like to have both over the island. Put in a recessed over the sink and have it on a separate switch. I would only do 2 larger scale pendants over a 10' island. I realize that odd numbers is what most people recommend, but for clean lines I think 2 is plenty as long as the scale is correct.

At one end of the 10 ft island is a half circle built into the granite that will be used as a casual dining space, enough for four counter height stools. I like the idea of two pendents and a can over the sink. Great idea to have 2 switches.
