Kitchen flooring

I need to replace the flooring in my kitchen/dinning room and was told I can not use ceramic tile because the cabinet above the refrigerator. They would need to put a sub floor then the tile. There is not enough space. What type of vinyl could I use it make the room look nice but not look like the flooring is old fashioned.

Go to some local flooring stores-- not the big box chains-- if you have any in your area and ask to look at the vinyl/linoleum. There are new options that are much nicer than the old stuff and won't cheapen the look of your home. Have seen some that looks just like wood-- now it's not going to fool anyone that it's real wood, but can pass for laminate or engineered easily to less discerning eyes. There are patterns that look like stone and others that look like tile, too, so many new things to choose from. I had some put in earlier this year and am happy with it.

what type of floor is in there now? if it is sheet vinyl and still in good condition, just ugly, you may be able to add a new layer of sheet vinyl over it. This is called embossing. It would add the least amount of additional height to the space without tearing everything out down to the original subfloor. There are some amazing fiberglass backed sheet vinyl options these days.

Thank you for answering. The flooring is outdated but good condition. Should I go with tile look.

Ginny..search Houzz photos "Marmoleum in kitchen". This is "luxury vinyl" and can be quite beautiful. The sheet method has no seams so no grout too - a big bonus.

Thank you. I will look at the vinyl/linoleum. If the counter top is dark what color should I go for the floor?

Darzy's right; photos will help get advice on here. Looking at samples in stores will help you because you'll instantly see things you like & things you don't. You can also check out samples from most places to bring home and try out in your space. That makes a big difference getting to see what the floor looks like next to your cabinets, in your home's light versus store lighting, etc.

I have attached pictures of my cabinets, island and the flooring I have now. I might be able to cut the cabinet above the stove and add ceramic tile. What color would look good? The floor now is a gray and white.

Tarkett has some nice vinyl sheet flooring with a lot of nice designs and colors. Nice looking and affordable.

Thanks for the photos. Okay, now we need to see the nearby flooring to be sure it works with the cabinets, counters and other floor it transitions to in the house.

What do you think of this floor? I think this color (and very subtle pattern) would work nicely with your cabinets, nearby floor, and counter. The best way is to get a few samples and lay it next to everything to decide which is best.
