Kitchen hardware - how much should I spend?

I'm redoing my kitchen and looking at a few different proposals from contractors. I'm trying to compare costs, and was most surprised by the cost of hardware. Generally, what % of my total budget should I expect to spend on hardware if I want something high-quality?

We offer an allowance of $2.00/piece. Generally good hardware runs from $4-$6/piece.

Wow! We are seeing much higher numbers - between 20-80/piece depending on size, finish, volume, etc. (Lower would be great though - if you have any specific recommendations.) To be fair, our kitchen is large and the total budget is high. As someone who's new to this, that's why I'm trying to think about the cost of hardware as a % of my total cost. Basically, what is normal?

Go to top knobs website. They have a large selection and I am sure you will find something that you like for the right price.
