What did "opening up" of the maples consist of?

First the two arborists spent some time assessing the tree. One stayed on the ground when the other climbed; they continued to 'confer'. I've never had two guys working together like this and I think it improved the outcome. I remember feeling quite annoyed when our previous guy missed a big dead branch and it was way past the point of asking him to return.

The climber used a saw and tackle and took down dead branches, some large some not so large. Also removed live branches with bad angles where were more likely to come down in storms. In very crowded areas (lots of underplanted shrubs) the arborist cut the branch, attached it to the pulley/tackle (I really don't know what it is called) and manually lowered it to ground. Thinned the canopy of smaller branches so more sunlight will get to the interior.

They 'limbed up' some younger maples both for appearance and to let more light in.
