Without seeing what the condition of your yard is and the overall plan for improvements it's hard to give a firm answer. My first question would be is there a reason you wouldn't use a french drain instead of hardscape? If there isn't positive drainage away from the building, it is easier to build up with grading which you would need to do anyway with pavers. The pavers or concrete will create surface runoff, whereas the french drain will allow the water to seep into the soil and be carried away via the buried pipe. Also, do you have gutters that discharge on the surface or below grade? If surface, splash blocks help to direct water away from the building. If no gutters it would be worth investing in. You can also use various types of vegetation to help with erosion and water control around your home. There are many options.

I was thinking French drain, too, but what I know about landscaping wouldn't fill a paper cup so I didn't say anything!
