Sewing problem with first few stitches

I'm sure there's got to be a simple solution to this annoying problem I have. When I first start sewing whether it's straight or a decorative stitch, the front edge of the material gets all bunched up and refuses to feed. I end up with a knot of stitches and/or the material becomes jammed into the hole for the bobbin thread. Sometimes I can start further down the fabric then push the backup button to the start but that doesn't work with the decorative sts. Sometimes I'll stitch through a piece of folded up paper to get a "running start" but that doesn't always work either. Is there some kind of gadget that's available to solve this problem, please?
