A customer recently brought his Troy Bilt Snowthrower, model 31AE6Q3711 in for maintenance, plus he was complaining that the wheels were locking up. After disassembling the axle and drive gears, I found that the needle bearings on the drive gear, and the hex shaft were

galled up, due to a lack of lubrication. You can buy a kit for this, which comes with new bearings, gears, and shafts.

Yesterday, a different customer brought in his Troy Bilt Storm, 31AE6GO3766, a newer model, with a much simpler drive system. It has a hex shaft with a seven tooth gear, which spins a 60 tooth gear on the drive shaft. It doesn't get much simpler. The only other difference that I can see, is that the drive shaft is mounted in the lower hole. Both machines have 15" Kenda sno Hog tires, so I'm trying to figure out how the handle height differs. So, is there any reason why I can't retrofit the newer drive system into the older machine?
