What about a pair of loveseats and a low-backed comfortable chair? The loveseats (or condo-sized sofas) could face each other and the chair would be at the end and face the stairs. A couple of floor lamps on either side of the sofa against the wall, and some nesting tables that you could spread around the room as needed. Maybe an upholstered ottoman or a coffee table in the middle. You need to draw this out to scale before you buy anything and make sure you have room for what you need. Great idea to test it out with actual pieces as you have shown here!

I don't understand why your arrangement is ignoring the fireplace. That's the focal point of your room and you've turned your back (literally) on it. This furniture arrangement, whether with loveseat or with two chairs, looks like it's hiding in the corner. Are you saving the rest of the room so the kids can roller skate or something? ;-)

I agree with Grover, you should turn your furniture to include the fireplace. Maybe bring those big bookcases to the other side with a pair of chairs a table, and a lamp for reading and table games.
