You should definitely paint those beams.

What a Great Wall color and with the brown sofa and wi Dow treatments! I'm not expert on decor so I'll let other Houzers take that one on. Just complimenting it thus far. ;-)

You have made some excellent choices so far.

I would paint the beams and the white washed paint white also. I like raw wood painted white if its in the right setting. Which is usually a bit rustic. So I would bring a slight contemporary rustic vibe with some accessories and smaller pieces of furniture(takes care of the browns). Other than that I would keep it predominantly in the light fresh whites and grays.

I would also consider lighter colored sofas and possibly new flooring(cant really tell if the color is abit clashing)

I would leave the beams and the mantel in the natural wood color, but paint the brick of the fireplace white.

I also suggest painting the fireplace brick white.

It would lighten up the room considerably.

I agree, it looks disjointed with the whitewashed beams. I figured I'd try it to see and would paint them if need be. I agree..they need to be painted. :(

What color curtains/throw pillows would look best? Gray? Blue? Brown? White?

Tems-can you give me some ideas of what you mean by a slight contemporary rustic vibe? What kind of accessories come to mind? (I would LOVE lighter color sofas...when my kids are older) :) The carpet has grays and browns in it..it works well in person.

Ilike blues and browns together I would get an area rug with some color to put on top of the carpet then choose a color from the rug for drapes on a nice rod with grommets to keep it simple . A good floor lamp maybe an arc for sure some end tables and some large scaled lamps . I will add some pics in next post

Maybe the table lamps with a blue base and I think I would white wash the brick it is too much contrast with the white shelving.

No photo to show, but if you did the other beams, I think the fireplace would be the heavyweight alongside your leather. The brick seems nice for a den feel. Lightened good too.

Not sure ceiling wouldn't look good same paint as trim: a soft white.

If your children are really young which it looks like they are, I would finish painting the beams or at least the whitewashed ones. Put some drapes on the window - a pretty print that maybe picks up the blue and a darker color to pick up the sofas. You can use some colors from the print for toss or floor pillows. Save the fireplace painting for when you do change your sofas. You might try a picture on the mantel to brighten it up some. Kids grow fast. Change it as they grow.

Paint the Base White, paint the backs of the built-ins white, get rid of the Beams if possible or leave them alone, leave the rustic Fireplace as is and get a matching large Ottoman for the Cocktail Table space so you can put your feet up in front of the Fire. I would go wood horizontal shades to tie in the fireplace. Done.

Thank you all SO much. I have some great ideas here to work from and feel like I can pull from everyone's suggestions. I feel so much better to have direction. Suggestions have been a huge help! It was hard talking my husband into painting the wood so the fireplace will remain as is for a while. :) I've got the first coat of paint on the beams and it already looks so much better.

That's great. It will contrast less.
