starting impatiens from seeds, need help

Every year, I spent a small fortune buying annuals such as impatiens, marigolds, etc from nursery. This spring, I started marigolds from seeds and got encouraged to start more annuals from seeds. I would like to start impatiens next spring. I would appreciate any advice from people who have done this... like lesson 101. Thanks in advance.
