What is underneath the rock?

What is underneath the rock areas? An older tile floor? How is maintenance/cleaning done? How well does a room like this handle a wet underfloor does the rock and wood planks need to be removed once in a while to check for water damage, debris, mold, etc.?

    We are seriously considering the loose rock & wood floor - I see you had it on concrete, ours will be on the 2nd floor so no concrete just wood subfloor. Any tips - did you use a liner or anything? What type of wood did you use? Thanks for any help!
