Help with blower installation?

I have a 15 year old pre-fab fireplace. First of all I know it won't heat the house, and I know its pretty much only a decoration. However having owned pre-fabs before with a blower I know they can also put a little heat out into a room. Not much, but enough to not have to stand "inside" the fire place to feel anything. That brings me to my issue. Looking over the manual it states my model supports a blower (which is no longer available of course). I have a power outlet installed inside the intake vent and I am confident one can be used. I went ahead and bought a replacement blower. One that was suppose to fit my model and have a simple install.
Anyhow there is a slot in the very back that goes upward. I assumed this was where the air needs to be forced through. The photos online seem to show how simple of an operation blowers are and was once again confident I could get this installed.
Onto my problem, the blower works, at high setting it puts out a lot of air. I pushed it into the back so the output flange area was up into the hole. Hooked up the power and cranked it on. Almost nothing comes out of the top vent. I had to tape on a 1 ply tissue to see anything move. And even then it just swayed. So I am trying to figure out if there is something I am missing, or something that blocks the flow that can be checked. Odd thing is the original diagram of the factory blower is kind of a rectangle box. But I have a feeling many were not just a flanged blower motor?
The front intake area looks a little different then example ones I can find online. Its not open completely and the center area looks to have a screw hole on each side. I can not find anything more on my FP though. I was hoping someone has ran into this issue, or has any idea's on how / what I should check things.
Front before I cleaned it. =)
