Do these windows, doors, lights go together?

Hi everyone,

We are doing a major remodel and starting to select the elements of our home. We are going for kind of an "urban farmhouse" style (our architect's term--whatever that is! :)): the kitchen will have white shaker cabinets, etc. Do you think these elements go together? We are design challenged and can't picture all of these disparate pieces together!

Thanks so much!

Our house (but windows will be white with gray/beige house and white trim):

Front door like this but in black:

Garage door (in white):

Light over the front door:

Lights on either side of garage (in black--maybe not this exact style but similar idea):

Interior Doors (in white with ORB hardware):

I think the upper divided lights with the four divisions wider than tall looks off. I'd try 2/2 or 2/1 rather than 4/1

Thank you, palimpsest. I actually wanted the 2 over 2s, but the architect suggested 4/1. I think it may have had to do with the 2/2s looking awkward on either side of the large front window? Thanks for the suggestion. I am rethinking...

There are a few similar builds around here and I think they look nice. If it helps, I am considering replacing some antique 5 panel doors with the same interior door style since that is the style of the original front door and "public" side master bedroom door. This is on an 1900 farm/cottage

How nice. I agree w Pal, but then I also just love 2/1 windows anyway and have been dying to use them.

As for the garage door, I assume you are going for a carriage look. I would generally use a bit more glass (like another pane maybe) to get that look, but maybe the architect is trying to line it up with the muntins on the front window? Also Id chose a door with raised stiles so that it looks like two doors. (even though its overhead)

I like black front doors, and you can make them "warmer" with the brass kickplate, etc and maybe even go glossy. Or do navy blue.

I agree with Pal regarding your windows.

I like all of the elements except for the light you've chosen for over the front door. That light looks too contemporary for an "urban farmhouse" style house.

I think you could get away with 1/1 on each side of the picture window because the overall scale would be similar to the panes in the 2/2 of the other windows.

Thanks, everyone. I so appreciate your thoughts. I am design-challenged to say the least, and it is really hard for me to see how it all will come together.

I love the idea of a navy front door. :) We are probably doing a navy island in the kitchen, so maybe I should go that direction in front as well.

I also love the suggestions on the garage door. The idea to not match the windows so that it recedes a bit make a lot of sense. So many things I had not thought of before! :)

I was with you right up until the light over the front door. That seemed a little jarring with your other choices, which I like.

:) I am sure you are right. I think I just like that light and am trying to find a reason to use it. I should probably go with something simple and dark that mimics the style of the garage lights, right? I was also considering using something more like a lantern, but I was wondering if that was a little too formal.

As for the front door, a friend suggested this one. Maybe, as blfenton noted about the garage door, it's better to have a slightly different window on the door, rather than repeating the same pattern as the windows?

That last door is beautiful. While I usually agree with not calling attention to a garage door, your garage is going to be prominent regardless of what you do. I think your idea to have some windows will dress them up, but I wouldn't paint them a color lighter than the house color.

Maybe some kind soul would photoshop both plain and paned doors for you onto your plan.

Here are some before and after pics. I don't think the plain doors are any less noticeable:

I think the ones above might be better painted a solid color.

Not the greatest paint color choices to my eye, but I think the doors look better than the originals - I might have chosen a different style, however.

And if you went with that last entry door and left it wood toned, these would look terrific, I think.

Will you have a back door? The black and white fixture you like so much might be good for there. I also agree with Pal on the windows, especially the ones on either side of the big one.

Your home will be beautiful, good luck!

Thank you all so much for the thoughts and support. I so appreciate it. This is such an overwhelming and complicated process! Thank you, Olychick, for the photo examples; they are very helpful--and I LOVE those final wood ones you've suggested.

    Hi all,

Sorry to keep this going. I found a photo of the house the architect originally designed with the 6 over 1 windows. Is this better than the 4 over 1s? Thanks, everyone, and hope you have a happy holiday!

I love 1 over one or 1 over nothing. Just a personal choice.
