Is there a preferred method to doing those ceilings?

I have gross white tile in the basement, looking to remove all of it and do the open ceilings. Do people usually hand paint or spray paint ceilings? Do you paint the electrical cords, etc.? Are there any words of wisdom or lessons learned anyone would like to share? Thanks!
