One large rug for the bed for warm toes on a cold night that coordinates with the wall color you choose.

Not sure of your budget, but you are off to a good start. Paint everything a warm white/cream, including the floor to brighten things up and lower the contrast in the room in a flat/eggshell finish to get rid of glare. You can also hang vertical blinds to set up 'rooms' and they become a walled off area.

This is partial screen but you can see how a room can be created by temporary blinds in different areas hung floor to ceiling.

Check out Lowe's and Home Depot for ideas on these, or even hanging curtain panels, floor to ceiling; IKEA has great deals of curtain pairs that are long and come with fusible iron-on tape for heming. Use to hide laundry area, storage area, bathroom area if you do not have a dedicated bathroom downstairs.

I would work on floor plan for the different area, paint floor use Pergo type click in flooring, or carpet squares for nice interesting flooring. Check out Flor Carpet Product and other sources of carpet squares online. Carpet remnants can also be used for flooring for wall to wall installation or have carpet bound all around and use as area rugs.
