You may need to decide which one you love the most, the painting or the credenza.

Perhaps, you could find a person in your area that makes or designs furniture, they may be able to give you some advice or alter it to fit.

We have not delved deeper into this, if i might? Is there a reason it cannot go on another wall of the foyer, put a mirror there?

If it cannot, you could remove the frame, hang the painting above the credenza frameless or with a new minimal frame (removing the frame should reduce the size of the painting). then take the beautiful frame and hang something else in it that you then hang somewhere else. Good thing about this solution is you have 2 beauties for only a little more than the price of 1!

Place a lovely mirror over the credenza. And hang the painting elsewhere. Perhaps the dining room.

I bet another spot can be found. Might as well have it look really good rather than forced.

Take it to a framer. Have the painting re-stretched on smaller stretcher bars, as it looks like you have room on the top and bottom of the painting to "crop" it. Then have the framer cut down the frame to fit. Don't do anything to the width. The measurement you saw on the tag was probably just the canvas size without the frame. It will cost you, but hopefully not more than reframing it.

It'd be worth a few minutes to measure the wall. It may be a bit more or less than 120 inches. Sometimes museums will hang paintings on the wall so that they tilt down a bit at the top.

The 4-6 inch base of the credenza looks like it is a separate piece from the rest of the credenza. Try turning it over or peer under it with a mirror to see if the base will come off gracefully. The credenza is finished in a way that will look fine without the base piece. No one will ever know unless you enjoy relating the story to guests.

Keep funky credenza, ditch (sorry!) tacky picture. Unless you are going for tongue-in-cheek bad 70s art vibe? In which case there are no rules when you're going "eclectic". Hang it behind credenza and add other over the top accessories, a killer rug and a bold statement chandelier.

The frame is lovely. The credenza is amazing! I am not in love with the picture however. It is dark and a bit tense.

I wonder if you would consider taking the picture out, and finding another one for the fame that was landscape instead of portrait and then you could hang it over the credenza like you wanted. I think it would look proportioned better hung that way. If you can't find art that you like in that size you could make one on canvas, or use a mirror.

One other thing. IF you are absolutely in love with the art then maybe a furniture place could shave 2 inches off the credenzas feet (After you measure the space of course). Good luck, you have nice pieces something good will work.

Maybe that is the solution for you... :) See how it looks by taping a piece of cardboard (cut the size of the picture frame) over the credenza.

I disagree with organizing lady. I tend to do rooms for what i love, predominantly original art, and a few other things. I hate more than anything the stuff that stylists put in that has no meaning. 3 white vases, 5 hot pink books. i would say at minimum you should have 1 thing you love in every room. but then i have serious doubts this person believes that. Houzz would not exist and we would only need one chair and one room no book shelves.

Christina, I think there are solutions to your dilemma. Whether everyone likes your painting or not, has no bearing on your issue. If you have a 6 1/2" frame and you want to hang the print, wait until you have a chance to measure the wall and find out exactly what your options are. You may be able to remove the bottom part of the frame, trim it and re-attach the bottom part to the frame. As I said, this is an entryway picture that will not get the attention. You will see the difference, but I would bet that 99% of the people that view it will not even notice. IF anyone is rude enough to mention it then just tell them, it came that way but you love the picture so you are working with it.

If I removed everything out of my life that wasn't perfect, I would live in a very lonely and empty world.

Step 2. Mount mirror in place of painting inside frame

Step 3. Turn sideways and mount above the credenza

Step 4. Enjoy the frame/credenza combo...and your brilliant idea

Is the painting an original work of art or a print or canvas print? If it is a print or canvas print it could be trimmed a bit from the top and the bottom and the frame shortened accordingly. This would not be an idea for an original work.

Is this print closer to your print in coloring?

I'm another big fan of measure, measure, measure! I'm convinced that just about anything will look good (or at least appropriate) if the scale is perfect.

It's not an original piece . It's stretched on canvas. The painting itself is probably worth very little, it the frame where the value is. The store I purchased the painting from was going to liquidation so everything was very reasonable. The tag on it was $ 2,600. I got it for $650.

it actually did look very bright in the store but it's wrapped and in garage now and looks drab and dark. I'm seriously considering now just taking out the painting and having a mirror placed in frame.
