Could be nutgrass. Dig one up to compare with the images in the link.

I've had liriope volunteer and look a lot like that.

OK - have dug one up and see that it is a sedge with the triangular stems, but not a nut sedge - no little nodules on the roots. Plus the colony is in a rather dry spot under an old apple tree, which doesn't jibe with the usual location for nut sedges: full sun, moist ground. Probably would have to wait till I could see a fruiting body to know for sure what variety. I think I'd better steer clear of it anyway, though I'll admit - as hortster suggested - that it reminded me of some of the domesticated ornamentals, and I like the contrast of grasses with flowers. Oh, well. Will stick with what I know. Thanks, folks!

I think it's a carex. Don't know enough to tell you which one. Look at Plaintain Carex. I think Plantain has wider leaves, but this is similar.

Dee - I googled the plantain carex, and don't think it's that, though the website I looked at: Prairie Nurseries, started me thinking again about the possibilities of using these sedges for the garden. I'll wait till next year and see what kind of fruiting bodies they have. That should help answer it.
