Way too much oak in the honey tone. If you want a wood floor, I would choose a dark color. Otherwise I would look at large tiles (15/16"), laid on a diagonal, in a lighter color than your cabinets. Sorry NO ! I would try "strand bamboo" for a kitchen floor so you will ease up on all that oak and it is harder then a oak floor.

I think the cabinet color is beautiful and wouldn't touch it. I do think that honey colored oak is dated but not ALL oak is.

For flooring, I would think you can still do oak - just in a different stain. My preference would be something very dark - or at least darker and without the orange tone. If you're doing site installed, a good installer can mix a stain that will be perfect for your kitchen.

It looks to me that the floor is oak oiled. That is about as classic as it gets. I love oak floors, always have, always will. Oiled oak is so easy to maintain and will never go out of style. I say do them, and paint the cabinets.

The cabinet color and the color of the flooring are not complimentary to each other, even though they are both oak.

The main problem here is we are taking up the ugly kitchen tile and combining the living room and kitchen with the same flooring since it is one great room. My husband is a woodworker and has built and designed all the cabinets so they cannot be touched. I am a tile and carpet gal but it divides the whole room in half and looks bad. I heard that dark wood shows all the dust. Still open for better suggestions.

You could go two shades darker than the cabinets for the floor. That would not be pitch black. The other option is to go much lighter on the floor, but it would have to be not oak. Take a drawer front down to the flooring shop next time.

If there is no flexibility in something like changing the cabinet color is there flexibility in changing the wood floor stain color? I think it's a matter of not just how dark it is, but the undertone colors of the wood. If you're not committed to just this stain, I would get lots of stain choice samples and try them next to the cabinets.

That's just too red for your cabinets. If this is the flooring you are trying to match from the living room, I think you are better off with the tile. If you are going with a new solid hardwood that needs to be finished after installation or even a prefinished in both rooms , I think you could get a more complimentary darker stain that would look nicer with the cabinetry - there are an endless number of stain combinations that could work without going so dark it shows every crumb.

Too much wood-on-wood! If you want a wood floor then paint the cabinets, otherwise choose a non-wood floor - how about cork? the new click-together linoleum products? (see recent episode on Hometime for the linoleum), stone? Change those shiny brass handles - very 80's.

I think the wood floor is beautiful! But, it looks exactly like the original wood in the 65 year old house we just sold. And, doesn't have the right tone for the cabs. I'm struggling with similar issues, so good luck!

keep the floor stained or paint the cabinets. they look dated and the 2 stains are fighting each other.

The floor doesn't go with the cabinets. It's just too much oak and the colors do not work well with one another. Have you tried a floor sample without so much graining like maple? That may work better with your cabinets but go darker.

Maybe paint the cabinets an antique white of offset the floor.

Too much wood, and your house will feel like a swiss chalet... If you like the look that's fine; otherwise, i would go with tile.

I would go with something a little darker to get a contrast and something with a little less grain....it's too busy.

If you want a natural product, consider slate

It's tough to get the "right look" when one thing is considered "untouchable" and the other is too tough to change! We love our "guys" but sometimes they get in the way when it comes to change/design.

A cork floating floor would do well for both of you - you the carpet/tile girl can have a "hard surface" floor that acts like carpet. You can float it right over that old floor if it is possibly and you can continue it into the rest of the house! So many colours are available that you/your hubby would have to be very stubborn not to find something that would work with everthing.

Here are some colours/finishes that would do exceptionally well with your cabinetry.

There is quite a bit of "brown" in the cabinets with some heavy grain. This reminds me of the wood that is heavily favoured in Germany (German's love walnut...everything walnut or nothing!).

Too close to each other in color. Either go darker or lighter with the flooring. I have oak cabinets throughout my offices and went with a lighter wood floor. Looks awesome!

there is no way those 2 stains can live together. one is warm the other cool. you have pretty cabinets, why not set them up with the right floor stain. it is easy to strip the rest and stain it.

Thank you all so much for your input. You helped me convince my woodworker obsessed husband realize that more wood detracts from his cabinetry. We will be laying ceramic tile to softly complement the cabinets and also switching out the outdated drawer pulls. Best yet, I get my plush carpeting in the living room. I already have enough wood floors in our house to care for.

We have finally decided on going with a heated floor under this awesome tile. Can’t wait to tear up the hideous old diamond pattern crap.

Am I reading this right? Seven years later? If so wow, I feel like I have been contemplating my flooring conundrums for a few years and it is mentally exhausting yet I don’t want to get it wrong. Congrats on deciding and going for it! It is a big decision

Yes it is seven years later...LOL that is my life. We just moved on to other projects. It is better to put his attention on other projects until he sees it my way. And thank goodness, trends change and styles evolve, so win win.
