Starmark Windows

Just got this quote from a dealer for a Starmark window, does it sounds about right? It comes with the option of being able to stain the interior to any wood colour you like.

Double Hung, Triple Pane, Krypton, SDL external

U=0.16, AI=0.05, SHGC=0.24, VT=0.40

32x56 - 1800/window installed.

Its one heck of a window. Hard to comment on cost. I do know triple pane- Krypton is very expensive.

the woodgrain interior also adds quite a bit. Is it just one window?

by the way, Starmark Windows absolutely beats out renewal and marvin infinity by a very large margin and on each and every performance metric.

+1. $1800 per is sticker shock for most any windows, but as Master said, that is a very high end product with pretty much the most expensive options chosen. Really knowing all of the circumstances behind the installation etc would tell the rest of teh story.

No, I did mention that it'd be about 16 at the very least for the wood stain option. Why is the mark up so high!? Grr.

I love old windows and am truly loathe to get rid of the old wood ones, some with TDL and nearly most with the original handmade glass, in favour of vinyl replacements so I was looking in to storm window options with soundproofing options and they too turn out to be 700-900 installed. Half the cost of the Starmark but not much cheaper than getting a good vinyl replacement window

Getting a very high quality vinyl is always a much better option than getting storm windows.

what state are you in ?

As Homesealed said, more details would be needed to comment on price, the number may even be low with out knowing all the details. Don't forget you will have to add staining on top of those cost if not included(would highly recommend having them pre finished before installation). Were they quoting the Starmarks with laminated glass? This would add a bit of cost and if you're not they may perform worse than what you have now as far as sound control.

Larson has a sound control storm that is priced very well and should be well below $700. They use 3/16ths non laminated glass which can obtain quite good STC ratings even with a single pane window, typically better than a standard IG unit or one with offset glass. It would all depend on the condition of your existing prime window. Even when renewal by Andersen was doing the noise mitigation for airports here the would put an exterior storm on there windows.

    I'm in Massachusetts.

The starmark doesn't come with laminate option.

We're getting the OKNA 800 and 500 series but I have a feeling the noise reduction will not be as hoped for. Although I think I've also mentally prepared myself for that now. Just really don't want to get rid of real wood windows as they're not rotted, just not maintained, and crafty, and sticking, single pane. ...you understand.

Okna is the one that makes the Starmark too.

Okna uses extra strength glass. The one thing my customers always tell me they didnt expect was the amount of noise reduction. I guess they are surprised because they were'nt expecting it. Extra strength, double pane glass with a foam filled frame and " non metal" spacer makes a big difference. Thats why when a customer mentions they want some noise reduction, i always let them know new windows with the features i just mentioned make a big difference along with a nice air tight install. Unless of course you live next to train tracks or an airport in which case i would recommend laminated glass( very expensive).

I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

That could really be misleading someone. Double strength glass often lowers an stc rating due to the airspace becoming smaller. You would get more benefit from the loss of glass space than double strength glass. I have noise complaints go both directions and it would foolish to say its going to one way or the other without knowing the specifics and even then it may be difficult to tell.

I talked to cardinal about this and they specifically told me extra strength glass will help. Are the engineers at cardinal glass wrong?

i cant see that happening Todd. You are telling me an installer knows more than an engineer that actually designs the glass?

  • PRO

The air space would, in theory, be narrower by 1/32" of an inch if the manufacturer actually used a different spacer. I don't think that any do in this case. The additional mass of the glass should more than offset the ever so slightly smaller air gap.

I am telling you that an installer knows things, perhaps more than another installer, and what you have said is hearsay. Even if the STC rating was better your comments would still be misleading in my opinion.

I would agree with you WOW ,as usual.

Yeah, ok Todd. It would be nice if you can actually monetize that alleged knowledge you think you have.

let me educate you a bit regarding the subject so perhaps you can convey this to your customers accurately.

adding double strength glass will reduce sound because you are simply adding more glass/ more mass. Further, you would keep the air space the same and in no way diminish it. If in fact you did diminish the air space for whatever reason, it would be more than mitigated ( a wash) at that point because you would still be adding more glass.

triple pane does an even better job at reducing sound than just adding double strength glass to a duel pane IG unit. As the engineer at cardinal explained, the " real world difference" in STC is usually more than what is stated on the actual stc number.

other factors to consider with helping the stc number would be to add foam to an extrusion, use a non metal spacer system, and perform an air tight installation. Since you install windows for various window contractors, i would imagine all your installs are air tight.

I don't understand your usage of the word "monetize".

i did aknowedge that thicker glass with same airspace would be better in previous post.

i would want to see the ratings before saying what airspace vs what thickness is better since I am no engineer but can read on a 5th grade level.

triple pane has a lot of variables, how much would depend upon what triple pane compared to what dual pane. Not going to try to decipher discussions between you and your real world engineer.

i would agree with the spacer and foam filled comments, and yes all installation should be done as airtight as possible.

i will continue to give my customers "real world " answers which quite often can be quite vague. At this point I am not ready to tell I chatted with some person on the web what talked to an

Can anyone recommend a okna dealer in Michigan? My googling has got me nowhere.

  • PRO

Not sure of Okna's coverage in MI. Have you contacted them directly for a referral? That would be my recommendation.

Only one place in Michigan, Infinity Home Improvement. Rated on google reviews, I'll say they are very consistent out of the 5 reviews, every person gave them 1 star. Looks like I might have to drop OKNA from my list.

  • PRO

I am recommending neither for nor against them, but I'd check a little deeper. Looks like they have an A with the BBB. Furthermore, my research shows that they are a huge company (10-20million in sales according to Manta profile), so 5 reviews from dissatisfied clients out of thousands of projects per year may not be the best sample size... Again, I have no knowledge of this company other than a quick lookup, just suggesting a deeper look whether that changes your mind or reinforces your skepticism.

  • PRO

They do a lot of windows , so only 5 bad reviews is probably a very good ratio. Keep in mind, many times reviews are done by unsatisfied customers that wouldnt be happy if you gave them the windows for free so as homesealed mentioned, do some more digging.

Thanks for the info and suggestions guys.

Fred M - I could get you the contact of an Okna sales representative if that might help. From the company itself, not a dealer. He might be able to advise you on nearby dealers etc. Let me know.

Its an excellent window. its called the Starmark Evo.

Redesigned verison, better ratings than listed above, its a killer window. The sales guy is either totally green or a liar though, that company had 0 to do with the design or glass. The glass is Guardian and it has excellent ratings.

    Cough...BS...Cough.

They didn't design anything in this case, but it is a great window.
