help with identification

last modified: 10 years ago

These things keep invading our raised beds; they grow an inch or two under the surface and form quite sturdy and dense a mesh, which one had to break with a shovel. There doesn't seem to be any green part to them -- just reddish-brown network of root-like strings, not thicker than 1/8". Pretty annoying! On the photo, this is what you get from just a sq.ft. Any suggestion of what it might be would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and best wishes!
