A white finish might appeal to you. It's not trendy like many light grays.

As apple_pie_order said, white would make an interesting stain color. You could also look into an ebony or limed oak color. Those might catch your eye as well.

Whites will be trending very soon in N. America. I'm already seeing increased interest in white floors for the last year. I'm assuming you mean "out side the box colours"?

Some of the European water based stains (out of Belgium and The Netherlands) are showing bright blues, vibrant reds, greens, etc. If you can get your hands on some of those, you would certainly be "out side the box"...because no one in N. America will handle those colours. They would be cool. They would be amazing. They would cost an arm and a leg to import. They would take a few weeks of training on how to use them...but they would be a one of a kind type of floor.

Choose a product(stain/finish) that's European based and you will have a spectrum of colors vs North American based which will have the Browns-reds-grays-neutrals.
Also find a well trained pro because most 'Jo the hardwood guys' can only do oil based stains.
Consider a dual coloured stain job ,ie black base color with grey spring grain( I picked that combo because in the new year we will be performing this one). These are not easy to pull off so vet your refinisher really really well.
