samson is somewhat lighter

the big guy was neutered yesterday and as much as i hated to do it, my vet agreed that tail amputation was the only solution to his "happy tail". nothing i tried helped to heal the sore and in fact, the last 2" of his tail was turning necrotic. i know he will be so much happier without the pain it surely caused him!

he took it like a man. his surgery was over about noon and i picked him up at 3:00. he was still a little wobbly and obviously sore but he sailed through both procedures. i had set up the giant crate in the living room and covered it with a dark spread to give him some privacy to sleep it off. nothin' doin', he wanted the couch!

she left about 7" of tail so he is a member of the stub club. i will unwrap it later today. if it looks dry, i'll leave it unwrapped. if there is any blood, i'll re-wrap it for another day.

he was pretty pitiful last night but this morning, he woke bright eyed and, well not exactly bushy tailed, but you know what i mean. he is acting completely normal, playful, eating like a horse and pestering the girls every chance he gets. now all i need to do is put some meat on his bones!

Oh, Nina, I love your animal stories! I laughed aloud at that first picture! He just says, "Leave me alone, please!" Did they send pain pills home with you? I hope so, I wouldn't want the little man to be hurtin'! He's "good to go" now, gain a little weight and love the good life along with his two girlfriends, who I'm sure will keep him in line.

I'm so happy he doesn't have to wear the cone of shame!

I am also happy that he ended up with you, Nina. Imagine his life with those peeps who would have just recklessly cared for/bred him. He's a very lucky boy!

Keep us posted on his tail condition. That surgery was the only solution for your happy boy's happy tail.

I was just going to post asking how he is. Glad he's back home with his peeps so he can recover. He does look a little dazed and uncomfortable in the pix.

thanks, everybody! i am having a really hard time keeping him quiet and still. he is supposed to not run and play for 5 days. ugh! it's all he wants to do!!

it seems there is a loose stitch in the tail incision. he has been bleeding more than i expected. i have put a pressure wrap on it and it looks like it has stopped. if it's still bleeding monday, i will put a call in to the vet.

yes, socks, he has 3 days of previcox for pain. i did give him a dose yesterday morning but he doesn't seem to be the least bit uncomfortable. i have never seen him lick at anything.

What a man! I'm glad he is "feeling no pain". It is amazing how they can take things like this in stride, isn't it? I hope he heals quickly so his playtime can resume!! Hugs to you both!

samson's tail finally stopped bleeding. i put a pressure wrap on it for a couple of days, took it off yesterday morning and things looked much better! took him to work with me yesterday just so i could keep an eye on it but it looks like we're finally in the clear and it is healing well. sutures come out in about 10 days.

it also looks like he has gained a couple of pounds. squeeee!!! he's eating 4-5# of raw food per day. once he's back up to a healthy weight, i'll decrease that. OR start raising my own chickens! LOL
